(1/5) Prior to this year's results, Andruw Jones was one of only 17 non-HOF players to be ahead of Carlos Beltran on all ten leaderboards. Now both players are Hall of Famers. This leaves 16 ranked players (and 2 Hall of Famers for context) ahead of Beltran for every peak length.

Chase Utley ended the pre-results portion of ballot season at 69.0%. We've added 15 post-results ballots since then and Utley has been on 13 of them! With 260 ballots tracked, Utley sits at 70.0%. Utley has *never* been at 70% in the Tracker (min. 10 ballots) until a few minutes ago.

(1/) So I've made a few updates to the leaderboards in the past two months. First and most obvious, Kent, Beltran, and Jones are now marked as Hall of Famers. I also decided that it wasn't a fair comparison for the catchers, so Posey, Molina, Munson, Freehan, Tenace, Posada, and Realmuto are off.

Jimmy Rollins (.324 OBP, 95 OPS+, 81.7% SB) hit lead off for PHI instead of Utley (.358 OBP, 117 OPS+, 87.5% SB). These days, Utley would be the leadoff man. If Utley (4.06 PA/G) had the same rate stats and career games, but had Rollins's 4.50 PA/G, here's what his career stats should be.

"Was this guy revered in his time?" Yes. I have MANY quotes that back that up but one thing to back up folks' adoration for Charlie is that he is the only non-owner (e.g. Comiskey) former player to have a MLB stadium named after him - Bennett Park.

3. When the Hall began it had a HUGE backlog of players to elect. 4. For ages after the Hall began voters did not have easy access to stats, and certainly not the scant defensive stats that existed then.

ACCOLADES He is tied with everyone of his era with 0 accolades. The awards and honors we usually discuss for the Hall do not apply here as they did not exist. That said, he received a wheelbarrow full of gold after the 1887 series, and Bill James named him the 1880s decade GG winner.

OFFENSE Let’s use OPS+ because it helps us contextualize to eras and it seems to be increasingly adopted. Charlie’s OPS+ is 119, and he played 15 years. How many catchers, per JAWS methodology of assigning positions, have played 12 or more seasons and have 119 OPS+? 18

Utley got on base, didn't ground into double plays, and didn't get thrown out. As a result, he had very few outs. There are 313 players in MLB history with more PA than Utley. Only 8 had fewer outs. In comparison, there were 37 players with fewer PA who still made more outs.

I do strongly support Jeff Kent’s case as a powerful slugging 2B for HOF induction but this only strengthens the cases for more well rounded 2B such as Whitaker, Grich, and Utley. Ken’t induction should open the door for fast induction of Utley, hopefully.
