Of course, I hadn't thought of that, haven't thought about yearbooks in a long time. Another example of how our systems for memory making are being eroded by AI. It really is like The Nothing™️.

Of course. Put these two things together and the whole school photo thing will be a dead tradition in less than five years. Maybe it's fine, the social need for school photos has been gone for a while, but I wonder if they're the only physical photos most people routinely see.

LA is HOT. But does it have to be this hot? Did you know shade from a single tree can drop temps by 20° or more? Yet working-class neighborhoods like South LA, East LA, and the Valley get the least tree coverage and bear the brunt of extreme heat. Let's finally cool things down for everyone.

The Jude Law subplot was the most prescient of all. Other than eventually being prosecuted as a grifter.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Our hiring system does that. I've several times had to ask HR to clarify why I'm seeking a clearly out of date resume that doesn't match the particulars of the cover letter. The applicants submitted new resumes but the system defaults to the older one for some reason.

In retrospect, one of the first (unrecognized) signs of my mom's dementia was withdrawing from social experiences, unpredictable interactions with strangers. She was always a homebody and introvert, so we didn't clock what was happening for, like, years.

As a californian, it is so frustrating in this year to know that we are going to be electing one of the more conservative Democrats as governor, and someone who is even more in bed with big tech than Newsom. We deserve better.

My mother was never unkind during dementia, but I would say that one of the things she gradually lost was a theory of mind for anyone other than herself. I think it must be very lonely, very removed from even the people closest to you, as the world and its interests narrow to a pinhole of light.

I work in grant funding, and so I'm starting to get a lot of LLM-assisted applications. I would describe the prose as more of a soft bludgeon, like being hit over the head by pool noodle while reading.

Oh my god, everyone in this movie gives an amazing performance. Laurie Metcalf & Glenne Headley are so funny, Ann Magnuson is a style icon. Her suits! Her car! The way she carries her rolodex on her arm so you know she is a boss bitch. Left an indelible impression on young me, and it holds up 100%.

When they get back in power, Democrats need to go all-in on higher education. We need a campaign of reinvestment in public universities across the country that makes the Morrill Land-Grant Act look like nothing by comparison *and* a GI Bill of Rights-style program of tuition grants.

The quote that went around when Wendell Berry died, "the next great division of the world will be between people who wish to live as creatures and people who wish to live as machines" comes to mind *often* these days. Trying to live as a creature is becoming my north star.

California Prop 38: - authorizes $4B spending in a way that only one research center in the whole state qualifies - privately funded research center - founder of the research center has donated $22 million to support the ballot prop This is, like, pure corruption calmatters.org/politics/ele...

Is this proposition a $4 billion giveaway to a billionaire’s LA research center?
Proposition 38 will award $4 billion to one unnamed research center. Under the very specific criteria, only one center seemingly qualifies.

I regret most of my APs, and I went to a top notch HS. But I also went to a top public uni where the same survey classes were light years more challenging and interesting. And then I had to fight to save my last semester when I was technically "done," but just getting to the best stuff in my major.

Happened to me decades ago! I had to fight to save my senior year, senior honors thesis opportunity, when I already knew I wanted to apply for grad school! And those AP classes were in no way the equivalent, not even close

I've asked my PCP twice if I could get my titers checked, and they basically laughed it off, told me they only ever did that for health care workers. Two different providers.

This happened to PhD programs in the humanities (normative time), and tho less student loan debt is good, is less time to master a discipline, become proficient in one or more foreign languages, and do original research involving unpublished or undigitized materials a net good for a scholar?

Less important of course, but the elevator in my building is also improving the aging experience for my 16yo dog with arthritis. It was out of commission for several weeks for cylinder replacement, and the stairs were not fun for her. Stairs inside the house would be rough times.

Wait, limited series (aka, mini-series) are ranked alongside multi-season series? That is a category error. The degree of difficulty is not the same, the genre is not the same, the pleasure for the viewer is different. I love some of these limited series very, very much, but they are not TV shows!

Trans rights is inherently a bodily autonomy issue. Just like abortion rights is. We can't have gender equity or reproductive freedom without trans rights. Full stop. You can yell at me and make up shit that you claim I've said if it makes you feel better. I don't care. I'm right. And you know it.

Working class means people who receive a wage, who must sell their labor to survive because they do not own the means of production. If you mean poor people, say poor people. If you mean people without a college degree, say that. Working Class means something pretty clear already.

I've been to two conventions there for professional organizations in my field that resulted in the orgs saying they would never come there again, attendees complained. The location is too disconnected from other DTLA destinations, unappealing for pedestrians. Can't fix that with upgrades.
