I'm listening to the recent episodes of @histphilosophy.bsky.social, talking about moral philosophy in late 17th Century France, a time when cynicism abounded and many people assumed that everyone was hypocritical — the only difference was whether you tried to conceal your hypocrisy.

Is it worth attending lectures as a student? The C15 German perspective:
Page from the Manuale Scholarium

CHAPTER XII
VARIOUS CONVERSATIONS AMONG STUDENTS
Cam. I was at a lecture. I don't suppose I learned a single word. Our preceptors compel us, we spend our time to no purpose.
Bar. How's that? I suppose you don't pay attention. Explain to me what's the bother.
Cam. The trouble is this, the subject matter is too deep and serious. I'd rather give my money and not enter; I'd do something worth while.
Bar. What sort of a lecture is it?
Cam. On the books de anima.
Bar. This book is of very little use to the unintelligent or to those who lack preparation. Why did you enter it?
Cam. Oughtn't I to take it?
Bar. Ask your master. Perhaps he can find a way out of it.
Cam. I did ask him. He says there isn't any remedy. If I want to take it, it'll be necessary to attend regularly.
Bar. I must be silent if that's the way your master feels about it.
Cam. Ha, ha, nevertheless I'll do as I please.

I think that does help. We feel "from inside" that we are conscious, so eliminativism has the burden of trying to argue downwards, as it were, that this is only a physical phenomenon. Whereas with machines we assume they are (just) physical so we have to be argued upwards that they are intelligent.

(Again,I find myself agreeing and just want a justification for this intuition.)

Peter Adamson @histphilosophy.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Intuitively I agree that eliminativism makes more sense for LLMs than for people; is there a good argument for why the default is different in the two cases, though? Why exactly should we be more demanding in the AI case?

Great discussion. Reading the Republic against the background of Thucydides has a precedent in Simon Blackburn’s Plato's Republic: A Biography (2006). He uses the Melian Dialogue (“the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must”) to clarify the stakes of Thrasymachus's position.

A Realistic Proposal About the Benefits of Public Philosophy - published on September 30, 2026
On some accounts, public philosophy is set the very ambitious goal of delivering societal benefits. On other accounts, it is met with skepticism due to the belief that it can be at most a form of entertainment or a way to popularize knowledge. In this paper, we make a proposal about what the benefits of public philosophy can realistically be. Although it is hard to prove that engagement with philosophy enhances well-being, creates better citizens, and successfully bridges science and practical concerns, doing philosophy can help individuals practice the intellectual virtues that underpin their epistemic agency, so it is not just a form of entertainment. With such practice, members of the public can better identify implicit assumptions in common ways of thinking, exercise intellectual curiosity and epistemic humility, and engage respectfully but critically with different perspectives. We offer three examples of public philosophy that are conducive to the practice of the skills that support epistemic agency.
