It is widely held that fitness is affected by population size, 'n.' But Grant Ramsey shows, in a new #openaccess paper in @jrnlofphil.bsky.social, that this familiar claim rests on both mathematical and conceptual mistakes.🔥 👇📃 doi.org/10.5840/jphi... #philsci #HPbio #evobio #philsky #HPS 🧪

Earlier this year, Alicja Kwade had a magnificent solo-exhibition in museum M Leuven. In the catalogue, I compare her sculptures with scientific models: "In the sway of a simple model; A philosophical reflection on Alicja Kwade’s pendulum". Pdf: www.sylviawenmackers.be/documents/We... #Art #PhilSci
Exhibition catalogue of Alicja Kwade, called Dusty Die. The cover shows a white door.Double-page photo of ParaPosition, in which a heavy rock balances above a chair. The wall in the background shows a photo of gray clouds; a real window shows the inner garden.Fragment of my chapter. Scientists usually think and communicate about fictional systems by means of equations and specific names, such as the ‘simple pendulum’, ‘frictionless plane’ or ‘ideal gas’. In doing so, they simulate these abstract model systems mentally. At best, they leave behind cryptic squiggles on a blackboard. In Kwade’s work we encounter similar conceptual abstractions, but she renders them as physical, material objects. She presents us with massive rocks that appear to defy gravity in works like Superheavy Skies and ParaPosition, which make tangible the kind of configurations that scientists only imagine.
It’s like Kwade read Godfrey-Smith’s concept of scientific models as ‘imagined concrete systems’ that ‘would be concrete if real’ (or ‘fictional concreta’) and called his bluff. As if Kwade decided: let’s make them real, then!

In 2023, @nature.com published 'Papers and patents are becoming less disruptive over time', receiving world-wide media attention. Our Matters Arising, published after a 32 month delay (more on that soon), shows that the reported decline can largely be attributed to dataset artefacts. 🧵
The average CD_5 index per year for Web of Science. The original Park et al. decline (top curve) becomes essentially flat (bottom curve) when removing papers with CD_5=1. Those papers largely correspond to dataset artefacts.

Are you interested in the modal logic of Aristotelian diagrams? In their paper, Stef Frijters & Lorenz Demey introduce AD-logic, a hybrid modal system whose "AD-frames" correspond bijectively to finite Aristotelian diagrams 📐👇📄 www.mdpi.com/2075-1680/12... #philsky #logic #mathsky #academicsky
Journal article header from Axioms (MDPI), titled "The Modal Logic of Aristotelian Diagrams" by Stef Frijters and Lorenz Demey, both at KU Leuven.

Abstract
In this paper, we introduce and study AD-logic, i.e., a system of (hybrid) modal logic that can be used to reason about Aristotelian diagrams. The language of AD-logic, ℒ𝐴𝐷, is interpreted on a kind of birelational Kripke frames, which we call “AD-frames”. We establish a sound and strongly complete axiomatization for AD-logic, and prove that there exists a bijection between finite Aristotelian diagrams (up to Aristotelian isomorphism) and finite AD-frames (up to modal isomorphism). We then show how AD-logic can express several major insights about Aristotelian diagrams; for example, for every well-known Aristotelian family A, we exhibit a formula 𝜒𝐴∈ℒ𝐴𝐷 and show that an Aristotelian diagram D belongs to the family A iff 𝜒𝐴 is validated by D (when the latter is viewed as an AD-frame). Finally, we show that AD-logic itself gives rise to new and interesting Aristotelian diagrams, and we reflect on their profoundly peculiar status.

Worried #AI will turn selfish & harm us? In our new 📄(forthcoming @philscijournal.bsky.social), we argue that selfishness isn't the real danger. The threat is "niche prospecting"—evolutionary #AI exploring the space of possible niches: philsci-archive.pitt.edu/30221/ #AISafety #HPS #philsci #philsky
Promotional poster of an academic article by Grant Ramsey and Juncheng Tao forthcoming in the journal "Philosophy of Science" styled after a classic Dr. Seuss "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" book cover. Against a bright red-orange background with a jagged green-and-white starburst at center, white hand-lettered Seuss-style title text reads "SELFISHNESS IS NOT THE REASON EVOLUTIONARY AI IS DANGEROUS." A black-and-white line drawing of the Grinch—a scowling, furry creature with a sly grin and arched eyebrows—stands at the center giving a thumbs-up. In the lower right, green text credits the authors: "By Dr. Ramsey and Juncheng Tao."

The Organism–Environment Pairing was published by @mitpress.bsky.social one month ago! As a reminder, the book is available #openaccess through the D20 initiative: direct.mit.edu/books/oa-mon... Please share it & help us bring this 📗 to as many readers as possible! #HPS #evosky #histsci #booksky
Promotional image of the Direct to Open (D2O) initiative of MIT Press that allows books to be read open access. Promotional graphic on a beige background for the book "The Organism–Environment Pairing: A Historical and Philosophical Reappraisal" (MIT Press, 2026) by Alejandro Fábregas-Tejeda. The book cover appears in the center of the image and has a green gradient background. The book series label “The Vienna Series in Theoretical Biology” appears at the top. The title is set in large, bold lettering using three colors: white (“The” and “Pairing”), warm yellow (“Organism–”), and bright green (“Environment”). The subtitle appears below in smaller white text, and the author’s name is printed at the bottom. In the lower right, a monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) rests on clusters of pink milkweed flowers. Behind it, a large pale-green butterfly silhouette fills the background; its outline follows the shape of a red lacewing butterfly (Cethosia biblis).

We are very excited to share our latest 📄 (@philsci.bsky.social): a revamped version of #nicheconstruction theory that captures the evolutionary consequences of organismic activities beyond changes in selection. We call it the 'Matrix Account' 👇 philsci-archive.pitt.edu/30043/ #evobio #HPS #hpbio
Promotional poster for an academic paper titled “The Matrix Account of Niche Construction” by Grant Ramsey and Alejandro Fábregas-Tejeda. The background features cascading green code on a black field, visually evoking the aesthetic of the film The Matrix. Curved white text at the top left reads, “A Ramsey & Fabregas-Tejeda Production,” while matching curved text at the top right reads, “Appearing Soon in Philosophy of Science.” Centered near the bottom, the stylized Matrix logo appears above the subtitle “Account of,” followed by the large title “Niche Construction” in white serif lettering.
