It's Friday Murder time. This week is about abortion and the law and once more asks the question "when is a murder not a murder?" In 1828, a major piece of legislation combined a load of different laws around interpersonal violence. It was called the Offences Against the Person Act 1828

Thought the Edwardian police in Peterborough just walked around bopping burglars on the head with their truncheons? Think again! These officers had skills!
The Chief Constable of Peterborough has brought before the Watch Committee the question of giving a course of instruction in ju-jitsu to the members of the police force.

"Come and visit," my parents said. "We will cook a roast dinner," they said. At no point did they mention moving a massive rock, dangling a bucket into an underground cistern using baler twine and hauling water up so they could water the garden. The roast spuds had better be good.

Friday Murder time and this one is upsetting. So I'm going to focus less on the details and more on the reaction of the police and their investigation. On 19th May 1891, some sailors noticed a bag in Sandon Basin, a dock in the north part of Liverpool. They took it out of the water and opened it.

It's probably time European journalists wrapped their heads around Heat Index (temp + relative humidity). In high humidity, sweating is less efficient, making heat worse, e.g.: Experiencing 35°C in London UK (70% RH) is more dangerous than 50°C in Phoenix Arizona (15% RH)

Another terrible AI-generated image of the gynaecological anatomy. It must be a day ending in a Y. Let's take a closer look at this wholly cursed illustration of a menstrual cup via @pzmyers.bsky.social
An awful, no-good AI illustration of the position of a menstrual cup. The cup is full of something that looks like strawberry milkshake and positioned firmly inside the body cavity with its stem poking out, It is labelled uterus (endometrium). Another arrow says menstrual cup (silicone, sealed). Above the menstrual cup floats something pink that looks rather like a brain with a screw hole in it. There is a bladder-shaped part beneath it which the stem is poked through labelled "vaginal rugae". The stem of the cup is once again labelled menstrual cup (silicone, sealed). Beneath the bladder-ish thing is a tube rather like the vagina labelled pubic symphysis, then bladder, then sacrum. It is painfully anatomically incorrect and it was really hard to write this ID.

Reformer Josephine Butler (1828-1906, b. Northumberland), died on this day 1906. Arguably most effective campaigner for women’s rights of her time. She ended coverture (whereby woman’s legal rights were subsumed by her husband’s), criminalised child prostitution and human trafficking.
