I’m a retired History teacher. I got the MBE in 2012 for Services to Education. I have written five books, three on the First World War, one on the Second and one on Hartlebury Castle and the English Civil War. I do History talks on many topics!

#OTD 1861: Birth of Stanley Owen Buckmaster, 1st Viscount Buckmaster (1861-1934) in Wandsworth. Buckmaster was a successful barrister. After taking silk in 1902 he was able to take forward his political ambitions and was elected Liberal MP for Cambridge in 1906.🧵

The brigade was in reserve, for the attack by the 29th Division and the French, but were not required by the time the attack was abandoned. Brigadier General Cox;s diary records, Ordered to position at bridge over Krithia stream – spent day there and bivouacked the night. 16 casualties – 1 B.O.

This arresting image is a c.1900 photograph of Ann “Granny” Boswell, an Irish wise woman of Romany lineage, who settled with her family in west Cornwall. Renowned as a healer, with special skill for healing sick cattle, she died in the workhouse in 1909. Rest in power.

📅#OTD in 1642, King Charles I agrees to a Bill that removes bishops from the House of Lords. This is a major concession from Charles & a major victory for his opponents, led by John Pym. The bishops had been a block of supporters whose votes Charles had relied on.
