When I speak to students, I always tell them to feel free to email me with questions. Sometimes they worry that I won’t actually respond, but what they should really be worried about is me sending a new link relevant to what they asked about every three days forever.

Many congratulations to Anne Carson for the well-deserved Nobel Prize! This is also great news for Translation, Classics, Poetry, the breaking of generic and disciplinary boundaries, and the fact that you don't have to fit a pre-existing mould to have a brilliant, successful career.

He's never said anything about tourette's to my knowledge, but he does have physical tics. He has also described how when people talk to him his mind has to complete the rhymes, which Lil Wayne has also said he has, but it's not clear if that's pathological or just how their sensory memory works

was also pointed to this video from britney spears when she was very young youtube.com/watch?v=wWuK... what also surprises me is how much it appears she may have been inspired by black american gospel music which was also so important to michael jackson, also a child star forced to sing love songs

Israel killed more than 70,000 people, including 20,000 children. The Israeli campaign displaced almost all of Gaza’s 2.1 million people from their homes, laid waste to much of the territory including its hospitals, leaving the Strip with the highest proportion of child amputees in the world.

it is also a mode of expression so strongly situated in the black american experience. james brown could never have been white. i love him very much (cc @docdre.distributedblackness.net )

i would love to learn more about james brown. his ability to express such powerfully arresting and beautiful vibrations superseding existing linguistic forms seems so strongly emblematic of my experience of tourette's.

eminem too represents an even more contemporary innovator in this respect–and he indicates that ocd and tourette's are part of his daily experience. this is another reason i believe tourette's to be deeply related to musical expression across history (cc @fireh9lly.bsky.social )

these are inseparable from the vocalizations which are so advanced they are not even recognized as such. there are very good reasons for their immense popularity, though western music theory has no vocabulary to describe why

d@nny disc@ @hipsterelectron.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
britney spears and michael jackson, for their respective crimes of being female and black, have their vocal technological prowess denigrated as memes, for their expressions which are too advanced for the western model of musical vocalization.

Well said in your conclusion. When the data is collected, it becomes a target and massive breaches are inevitable. What makes biometric data attractive is that you can't change it. And the power is asymmetric, serving only to bind and exploit ordinary people, despite platitudes of protection.
draft Digital Identity Guidelines. This language on biometrics in the draft IAM roadmap seems to set the US down a path to further massive breaches of persistent identifiers which can never be replaced, and which forces the federal government to rely further and further on external vendors to provide unproven and unreliable biometric authentication mechanisms instead of building off of the proven and internationally-recognized NIST cryptographic standards. I fervently hope to see more of the draft Digital Identity Guidelines reflected in future drafts of the IAM roadmap.

I will leave you with a reminder of a classic category of failure, infamous directly because of its relationship to national security (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McNamara_fallacy):

The McNamara fallacy (also known as the quantitative fallacy), named for Robert McNamara, the US Secretary of Defense from 1961 to 1968, involves making a decision based solely on quantitative observations (or metrics) and ignoring all others. The reason given is often that these other observations cannot be proven.

This is a useful thread. I want to examine "AI tools are power". The UN Scientific Panel report used this framing to promote the concept of a "digital divide", but that presumes that the power is neutral. I argue that it is fundamentally asymmetric, more a tool of empire, oligarchy, and scammers.

This provides no value to ordinary people, but it gives a quantitative fig leaf to enforce and amplify a social hierarchy. Closing an "AI divide" by increased adoption in Africa means what? Replacing this old-fashioned discriminatory algorithm with a chatbot? This is not a technical problem.

Specifically the placement of 7 really annoys me. I don't know why they put a triangle number next to a bunch of loop numbers if it isn't to signal anything (0 and 1 are clearly two of the greatest designs ever to exist, absolutely iconic)

Got sick of the Dratini-Dragonair-Dragonite situation of the digits so I propose a new order
Discord post:

Ok I figured it out here is the correct order of the numbers

0 - circle
1 - line
7 - two lines
4 - three lines
5 - combination of straight lines and a loop
6 - same as above turned into a loop
3 - two partial loops
8 - two loops
9 - one loop facing opposite way
2 - combination of straight lines and a loop, facing other way
