in the year 2001, over 40,000 people in the USA officially died in motor vehicle crashes. this is likely an undercount. there are little crosses and memorials on every road, bridge, underpass, highway, freeway, on buildings now pre-reinforced with steel bollards.

For many years, ICE didn't have its own medical claims processing for detainees, running 3rd party medical bills through the VA's system. Last year, right-wing influencers convinced the Trump admin to abruptly cancel this contract. With no replacement, ICE specialized medical care has gone unpaid.
ICE has not paid any of its providers for detainees’ care since Oct. 3, 2025, according to agency regulatory filings and the ICE website. In an internal directive issued shortly after, obtained by the Chronicle and not previously reported, ICE declared “emergency operations,” sharply limiting offsite medical care and access to medication.

Hospitals and ambulance services told the Chronicle they are owed millions of dollars, while many detainees have had appointments for lifesaving medical care delayed or canceled. Medical providers say they have continued to provide care out of moral obligation, although some observers worry that fear of nonpayment could deter them from offering services to detainees.

On today’s grim one-year anniversary of the Trump administration’s boat strikes campaign — which has snuffed out at least 227 lives — it’s more important than ever to insist that the strikes are not simply inhumane and ineffective, but illegal. My reflections in @thehill.com :

How can we think is OK? Surely this must demand some pretty fundamental questions about the society we've built. As IPPR says, we can not blame young people, and must look to structural and social issues shaping childhood and youth, and, importantly, must respond with more than "youth policy".
IPPR argues these trends cannot be understood by treating young people as simply less resilient than previous generations. Today’s generation has grown up amid an extraordinary combination of austerity, Covid-19, rapidly growing social media use, economic insecurity and increasingly difficult transitions into adult life, such as expensive rents and unaffordable house prices.

None of what she is saying should be remotely controversial. Drivers are "emboldened" to the point that they regularly endanger and kill people!
She lashed out at the drivers she says have become “emboldened” to put pedestrians at risk because they aren’t penalized, and made it clear that pedestrians, rather than people who get around by driving, are her priority as a Boston city councilor.

“I’m really upset sometimes to see how emboldened drivers can be to hurting and really making a dangerous environment for pedestrians,” Durkan said. “Just yesterday, a car literally tried to back into me, and I had to slap the car to get it to stop backing up.
