Bought a thermal top. It’s soft and warm but do not let anyone you want to find you attractive see you wearing it on its own. It highlights your body’s worst features. It’s like being told by a vest why you’re dying alone.

What a fucking day. Drs, when I told them of a patient having chest pains & numb arm replied with "That's Dr (Name's) patient." Another patient swabbed for TB but no one had sent the swab off because "(name) should have done that yesterday." Meaning we've all been exposed to (possibly) TB.

Re-introducing a Hookland childhood nightmare/beloved icon. Mr. Lookout – the ghost bear mascot of the Hookland Tourist Board's 'I-See! series of books'. The scarrer of many a child's imaginations as depicted by @tomsbrown.bsky.social. #MrLookout #Hookland
A ghost bear. A big, fat ghost bear. Wearing spectacles, holding what appears to be a bone wand. Trust me, it is one scary bear. The text says: Mr. Lookout

the world is a rough place these days, but there are tiny glimmers of light everywhere if you know where to look for example, my sister just texted that their youngest decided to take up the trumpet and was honking away all evening in the garage, driving them nuts, and that did bring me real joy

My definition of "dogging" is not putting maximum effort into something. Absolutely no idea about "fly tipping," though, and I doubt my gut instinct of "inadvertently letting your opponents know what fishing fly you're using in competition" is accurate. 😁

We have something very cute to share with you today 🦉 This summer, a pair of barn owls successfully reared four owlets at Kedleston Hall, marking Kedleston's first known breeding success in over two decades.
Four young barn owls jostle onto the small wooden ledge of their nest box, fixed to a huge oak tree behind themA young barn owl in flight, its wings stretched up above it against a blurry green background, its white heart-shaped face facing the cameraA young barn own in flight, a blurry oak tree behind it, its huge white and brown wings beating downwards as it looks at the cameraA barn owl swooping down with its wings fanned wide across a field of long purplish grass

A constant recommendation.
J is for …
Jansson
One of my favourite imagined places to inhabit as unhappy
child was Moominvalley. I am still an unofficial ambassador
for it, telling young writers I mentor that they will struggle
to find a better constructed fictional world. I push those
writers into reading Tove Jansson because she makes
words dance, because she makes locations shimmer with
a sense of nature holding within it the not-quite-real that
may manifest at any moment. I push because she is one
of the finest storytellers, because her imagination still
pushes me. I hope that is all in Hookland, as no book ever
taught me more about the power of dark absence in a text
than Moominvalley In November. While the Moomins may
sometimes overshadow Jansson’s stunning lines as illus
trator, the sheer fairytale menace of her early paintings,
they cannot obscure her power to create spaces where the
mind may walk in hope of wonder

Google Gemini says that @jevinwest.bsky.social and I aren't to be trusted because in our first lecture, we had a playful example where Jevin presented data the same way that Tim Cook did, and I called bullshit on it. It hallucinates criticism and the only citations are to the lecture itself.
1. The "Explosive Growth" Slide ControversyIronically, the most direct and explicit example of this occurred during their very first "Calling Bullshit" lecture at the University of Washington. The Setup: Jevin West presented a slide to the class showing a graph that purported to show the "explosive, hockey-stick growth" of web traffic to their new Calling Bullshit website. The graph utilized standard marketing axes and compressed timeframes to make the project look like an unmitigated, runaway viral sensation. The "Bullshit": Carl Bergstrom actually had to step in and call "bullshit" on his own co-instructor's slide. When the data was displayed honestly without selective axis truncation or creative smoothing, it showed that while traffic was high initially, it heavily ebbed, flowed, and plateaued over time. The Criticism: While some praised this as a playful, planned pedagogical moment to show that "anyone can fall prey to bad data framing," critics viewed it as a perfect illustration of the double standard: when it serves a personal or professional promotional narrative (like proving your own course is a massive success), the temptation to use flawed, hype-driven metrics is incredibly high.
