Ospreys are disappearing along the US East Coast due to a shortage of Atlantic menhaden, a crucial food source for ospreys. One company alone harvested nearly 300 million pounds of the fish in 2024 but somehow claims they’re not at fault. 🧐

Ospreys are disappearing along the East Coast. Scientists think they know why.
At the center of a widening crisis for one of the nation's great wildlife comebacks is a fish most Americans would hardly recognize.

I think something to consider here is that Collins voted to confirm Russ Vought as OMB Director despite the fact that he said a billion times that he thought Trump had a constitutional right to illegally impound funds, and now she’s doing shocked Pikachu reactions.
Sen. Susan Collins • fAl

@SenatorCollins

Without warning or consultation, Congress just received an $810 million package of pocket rescissions from the Administration. This is the most recent attempt by this Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to undermine Congress's Constitutional power of the purse.
This move shows that OMB intentionally withheld these funds for months to execute this unlawful cancellation of appropriations that were approved on a bipartisan basis and signed into law.Not only is the delay itself an impoundment that was not reported to Congress, but also it is a usurpation of Congress's appropriations powers.
OMB is an agency of the executive branch. It does not get to decide which programs are worth funding.
The independent Government Accountability Office has concluded that pocket rescissions are unlawful and not permitted by the Impoundment Control Act. Any effort to rescind appropriated funds without congressional approval is a clear violation of the law.
I will work with my colleagues to address these illegal actions.

Photograph of Mary Allen Wilkes (born 1937), the pioneering computer scientist, logic designer, and attorney renowned for writing the foundational operating system software for the LINC, the world's first personal computer. She is shown from the chest up, facing slightly to her right with an open, engaging expression and a warm smile. She has short, styled white hair and wears thin, round wire-rimmed spectacles. Her attire features a layered ensemble: a dark grey or taupe turtleneck sweater paired with an open black cardigan jacket. She wears a prominent, tiered statement necklace consisting of three nested strands of oblong black, grey, and cream beads.The backdrop is an understated, minimalist office or lecture setting with pale beige walls and a dark vertical partition line visible on the left. In the lower right corner, the glossy edge of a modern laptop screen is partially visible, hinting at a professional presentation or speaking engagement. The overall composition is clean and centered, creating an approachable, intellectually distinguished mood that underscores her lasting historical significance as an elder stateswoman of computer science and law.

patient zero for whats wrong with the democrats nymag.com/intelligence...
Instead, BJ McCollister, who runs a Maine-based consulting firm called Frame Strategies and was Jackson’s chief of staff in the state senate, offered a choice of two people vetted by Schumer’s DSCC. The campaign went with Hilary Barrett, the former Nevada caucus chief for Joe Biden during the fractious showdown there between Biden and Sanders in 2020. (The campaign says it conducted an “exhaustive search” for the job that included more than two candidates.) Other consultants came from BerlinRosen, Hilltop Public solutions, and TKO, all powerful Washington- and New York–based firms strongly aligned with the Democratic Establishment. These firms had also been involved in Jackson’s gubernatorial efforts, but now they were in the driver’s seat.The Jackson campaign’s wariness of in-person events seems to merge with a general suspicion of Mainers and their conviction that they know what’s best for Jackson. A handful of them who work as staffers at this point “are treated like garbage” by the campaign bosses, according to one source. What’s more, this person went on, “in their mind, Troy is lumped in with them. There’s a vision of Maine that these folks have.” Multiple sources said campaign managers turned up their noses at some of the hokier events on his schedule, including a boisterous karaoke night and a contra dance on Labor Day weekend. “They think it’s going well when Troy is boring AF,” said another person with knowledge of the campaign. Karaoke, held at Baxter Brewing Co. in Lewiston, “was a blast,” according to one attendant, packed with people who were Jackson’s delegates or organizers. “Troy was on fire, and he was just himself again.” Members of the Washington contingent, according to multiple people present, hung out on a couch by themselves and left after about half an hour.

Another source familiar with the campaign said, “I don’t even think it’s disdain for Maine so much as it’s just disdain for, more generally, people. They want to run this campaign through numbers and spreadsheets. And wherever a campaign is connecting with people or doing anything quirky or unique, they’re like, ‘This is bad and weird.’”
