The Social Reckoning Con: Social Network as a piece disproves entire worldview of lead creative as Facebook has since proven to cause problems because of systemic forces instead of one man, this one only exists because that's embarrassing Pro: That is an undeniably crisp Zuckerberg impression

I am learning that there are apparently still people who listen to "the radio," as in the device that tells you what song you will be hearing, instead of the other way around. Apparently what plays on the waiting room noise generator is of some consequence, culturally. Or, so they say

Good writing in my view - while some commentary on here has framed Sheeran's justification as a demonstration of the hollowness of "neutrality", as a professional moral philosopher it is also what we in the business refer to as a "lie" and it may be helpful to refer to it as such

This report is totalitarian pseudo-science, aka corrupted science in the service of far-right authoritarianism. Who commits most of the political violence in this country has been clear for decades. It's not the left. It's not those of us who support trans rights and realities.

here is the thing. if you tell me that you believe that race is a biological category and that it is a guide to the objective superiority and inferiority of groups of people, i am not calling you a racist to *insult* you, i am calling you a racist because it best describes your beliefs.

If you are skipping parts of books because you don’t sufficiently “relate” to something (whether it be a plot line or a character), you are doing yourself and the book a huge disservice—such a gross consumerist way of understanding / engaging with novels (or any storytelling)

Eight months ago, This American Life sent reporters from Chicago to cover the protests and counter-protests outside the ICE facility in Portland. They chose Karlyn Borsynko to be their local guide to the world of Antifa. What they failed to mention is that KB self-identifies as a fascist.

It's hard to tell if we live in a golden age or a dark age of curation. I guess that, like with a lot of things, there are more people than ever doing it, but the people who do it for the masses are worse than ever

It's really something how so many of our richest people got that rich from being lucky only once or twice. Elon Musk was along for the ride on Paypal and turned an EV company into a stock scheme and offsets clearing house, and now we all have to watch him whine about us not liking him forever

Also, thinking of hyper-gendering, what is the deal with the term "warfighter"? When did that come in? It's so comically macho that it sounds like satire, à la Verhoeven's Starship Troopers (though perhaps Heinlein might have kicked himself for not thinking of it first)

Hegseth's bizarre testosterone obsession is just proof that we are a nation run by, among other things, gym bros. Testosterone equals masculinity equals power... Never mind how our current imperial misadventure is going. It's bro science applied to the nation. It's an empire experiencing tren rage

I don't entirely understand what caused the hyper-gendering of contemporary romance covers. Of course, there has always been plenty of romance with derivative covers, but I can't remember a time before now when you could tell you were in the romance aisle because everything suddenly turned hot pink

1. There are LOTS of blatantly anti-Catholic Chick tracts - I remember seeing these as a kid in Georgia in the mid-90s, and my parents were atheists/agnostics. 2. If you don’t know what a Chick tract is, you may be very sheltered from the reality of how insane most American evangelicals are.

I think my problem with a lot of contemporary horror is that it's too obvious what the thing is a metaphor for. In my opinion great horror imagery is basal, abstract, hard to exactly pin down. I feel like with a lot of the contemporary horror I've read I'm going "I get it already!" by page fifty

If we continue to insist that the Lochner era was a one-time aberration, then we're going to continue to be baffled as courts repeatedly deliver results that ought to be anomalies. But the judiciary has always been a weapon against social change, as any liberation or anti-war movement can tell you

for #makeaterriblecomicday2026, some history and culture
The oldest ones in the book: ancient greek jokes from 300 CE.
1. Do you ever look up at the full moon, and wonder... do they have this in other cities too?
2. They call this guy the Rooster. Because when he starts singing, everyone gets up.
3. This honey is really good! Thanks! I think so too. Matter of fact, I would've kept it for myself, if that mouse hadn't fallen in.
4. Are you married? Nah, man, I'm a eunuch. We don't get married. Oh, sorry... so do you have any kids?
5. I heard that onions give you wind. So I take them when I go sailing.

(Very loosely translated from Philogelos, attributed to Hierocles and Philagrias, circa 4th century CE)

Happy Pride to this Caravaggio self-portrait that made one man so gay he had to go to the hospital
Caravaggio's Baccus painting, featuring a lush fruity spread and leaves bedecking a pasty twink who only works out his armsArticle screenshot that says:

The most extreme examples of
Stendhal syndrome share a sensation of
self-fragmentation. Magherini
describes the case of a 53-year-old
German man who was hospitalized
after repeatedly viewing Caravaggio's
Bacchus at Uffizi Gallery. The patient
felt "an attraction closer and closer to
an intimate sexual arousal of
ambiguous nature that invaded him
and made him feel good and bad."
Unmoored and distressed, he sought
medical attention. After treating the
subject's initial episode, Magherini
writes that he came to recognize his
latent homosexuality. Another case...

Since PTSD is being invoked to excuse any and all abuse and misconduct, let us acknowledge where it is most common. .... From my book Recollections of My Nonexistence.
The former Marine David J. Morris, author of a book on post-
traumatic stress disorder, notes that the disorder is far more com-
mon and far more rarely addressed among rape survivors than
combat veterans. He wrote me, “The science on the subject is pretty
clear: according to the New England Journal of Medicine, rape is about
four times more likely to result in diagnosable PTSD than combat.
Think about that for a moment— being raped is four times more psy-
chologically disturbing than going off to a war and being shot at and
blown up. And because there are currently no enduring cultural nar-
ratives that allow women to look upon their survival as somehow he-
roic or honorable, the potential for enduring damage is even greater.”

Jack Antonoff and Taylor Swift have pioneered a kind of performance art wherein instruments are played and vocals are sung but no music happens. Not melodic enough to be pop, too melodic to be folk, too watery to be rock, and played with real instruments, so not noise, it just sort of happens at you

Designating pro-transgender activism as "terrorism" continues a long lineage of the state criminalizing minority liberation struggles (often but not exclusively around race). There is no such thing as "terrorism," and the term exists solely to add stigma to things a minority does, violent or not

"Cyberpunk" is an interesting genre because it is frozen in time. You read a work in it from 2000 and it's a direct riff on Gibson. You read a work in it that's brand new and it's a direct riff on Gibson. In the Cyberpunk 2077 video game, the Soviet Union still exists. There's just no forward motion
