Hi friends, I am participating in a symbolic pilgrimage in October where we walk a physical path reflecting the historic path from WWII Japanese American incarceration to current ICE detention centers. If you're in the area, please check out our public events, especially the Solidarity Day at NWDC

Boiling him was a success and now he is a better shade of orange, tho the paint job is not as even (doesnt bother me, i like the texture). Im running out of wall space so i had to hang him over the entry to dry and now he watches over me/welcomes ppl into my lair
Photo of a mordant painting on a large fabric square, of an orange tabby cat. The painting is hung from a wire, high in the air.Photo taken from the other side of the painting. It is hung in a doorway. Underneath the painting is a view into an art studio full of fabric, dye equipment, and sewing supplies. There are small quilts hanging from the wall in the background, as well as one window that is covered on the outside by green overgrowth.

Haha okaaaaay heres some cute residency pics
Photo of higu’s work table, cluttered with sketchbooks, colored pemcils, markers, and brushes… also a random quilting ruler for some reason. In the top left of the photo we can see part of higu’s body as higu extends an arm over a sketchbook.Photo taken from behind of higu putting up a tiny mordant painted/naturally dyed piece of fabric up on a quilt design wall. Higu has long, dark curly hair and wears a purple plaid flannel. There are more mordant paintings of varying sizes and colors on the wall. Photo of the quilt design wall, from an extreme side angle.Photo focusing on higu’s hands sorting through a pile of naturally dyed fabrics that are spread out on a green cutting mat. The background is out of focus but there’s a window back there.

Things are happening
Photo of a comic/illustration page drawn with brush and black ink. It features two trans men, Lucky and Mary, embracing. In the first panel they gaze into each other’s eyes, sparks flashing on each side. The second panel is from behind Lucky, who holds Mary in his lap as they kids and Mary clings to him. The third panel is a closeup on their mouths as they makeout. At the top and bottom of the page are flower motifs inspired by rural Pennsylvanian folk artPhoto of the first panel of the illustration projected onto a large piece of fabric tacked to a white wall. In the bottom left foreground of the photo, higu’s gloved hand emerges, holding a paintbrush and a jar of alum mordant paste. Unfortunately we cannot see higu’s really cool palm tattoo, but it’s important to be safe while handling dangerous materials!

The initial yellow was weld, last night I overdyed him with cochineal. I think he came out too red but i will boil him tonight to see if i can get some excess color out. If not… we’ll see how I feel next week. A safer bet would have been to do a pomegranate/madder dye-bath to start… OH WELL!!!

I havent worked on this quilt in a while (residency + show prep, too hot out to quilt) but heres pics from when i basted the bastard. The backing is a lighter cotton i dyed with osage (yellow) and modified with iron to get a grassy green. Spent ~3 hours aligning it so the squares would match up lol
Photo of a quilt sandwich on a hardwood floor. Higu’s hand extends from the bottom left frame, pointing at the quilt too so you dont miss it. The quilt top is a log cabin modification: the center square is red (dyed with madder) with concentric squares around it (alternating between strips dyed with cutch modifed with soda ash to get reddish brown, and osage overdyed with cutch to get yellowish brown)The back of the quilt sandwich before being basted. It is a grassy green (odage modified wirh iron). In the center is a light brown square.Closeup on the quilt top in the process of being quilted with yellow sashiko threadThe back side of the quilt.

The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

O Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years
2023
satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.
