I only posted the BL quilt so far but boy howdy i made so much stuff last month. Heres a small single block wallhanging that uses a mordant painting for the center. Dyed with cochineal and different shades of cutch. The backing and binding are a cutch tannin mordant base with cochineal on top

the central art components of the BL quilt are done!!!!! I still need to paint and dye the borders, but this is the culmination of my experiments and projects during my September artist residency at Bunker Projects ^_^ i had a lot of fun and learned A LOT. Grateful for the opportunity!!

At the top and bottom of the quilt top are folk art motifs, also mordant painted and naturally dyed pink. Overall, the quilt top is shades of pink and white. It measures roughly 56 inches by at least 70 inches, and is hanging from a clothesline on a white wall.

Historically— diff styles of art, tone, content, and intended audience. You could argue that some of those boundaries are becoming more blurred. Also fwiw “bara” is a frowned upon term in japan but still common in the west

The lowdown (more in depth when i make a patreon post this month): I mixed three mordant pastes to get 3 tones. The light parts (eg highlights on their eyes and cheeks) were achived by mixing a citric acid discharge paste :’) this was dyed in a strong pot of cochineal… PHEW

Boiling him was a success and now he is a better shade of orange, tho the paint job is not as even (doesnt bother me, i like the texture). Im running out of wall space so i had to hang him over the entry to dry and now he watches over me/welcomes ppl into my lair

The initial yellow was weld, last night I overdyed him with cochineal. I think he came out too red but i will boil him tonight to see if i can get some excess color out. If not… we’ll see how I feel next week. A safer bet would have been to do a pomegranate/madder dye-bath to start… OH WELL!!!

Two modes at the studio today

i guess this is three modes. anyway at the end of this residency i will make a zine of my studio sketchbook to send to patrons and perhaps sell to plebeians. it’s a lot of notes and drawings of men kissing and me running with saws. maybe i will paste in some studio photos too :)
