Better together: working towards a dynamic, collaborative, connected health research ecosystem in the North of England
Northern Health Science Alliance This report highlights the potential of the region’s health and life sciences strengths, whilst identifying barriers that can prevent promising collaborations from getting off the ground. It also identifies obstacles to researcher mobility between sectors, including complex HR arrangements, differences between NHS and university terms and conditions, concerns around career progression and job security, and a lack of funding to support staff time and backfill. Our study found a clear link between deprivation and women's use of emergency care in the year after giving birth. In the most deprived areas of England, 27% of deliveries were followed by an emergency hospital contact, compared with 17% in the least deprived. Read the report: buff.ly/v1RkPIL
Bar chart showing the proportion of deliveries followed by an emergency hospital contact in the first year after birth across five deprivation quintiles. Headline reads: “Women living in deprived areas are more likely to attend A&E in the first year after birth”. Subheading reads: “Deliveries followed by an emergency hospital contact”. Five bars decrease in height from the most deprived to the least deprived areas, with rates falling from 27% in the most deprived quintile to 17% in the least deprived quintile. A dashed horizontal line marks the average rate at 22%. The chart shows that women living in more deprived areas of England are substantially more likely to have an emergency hospital contact in the year after giving birth.
