Thinking about reading The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy? This review from the OUH Book Club's July meeting might just convince you! To register for August's book club, go to ox-ac.libcal.com/calendar/hcl... or contact hannah.mcgivern@bodleian.ox.ac.uk for more information.
Set in Kerala, India, The God of Small Things follows twins Estha and Rahel as they revisit the events of one summer that changed their lives. The story slowly unravels through shifting timelines, revealing how family, caste, politics, and tradition shape the fate of everyone involved. What stayed with me was the way Roy captures the world through children's eyes. Roy understands that children notice the little things - the objects, sounds, and peculiarities that adults can overlook.
At the heart of the novel are what Roy calls the "Love Laws". These laws reach far beyond romance. They govern friendships, family loyalty, neighbourly compassion, and even political allegiance, decisions, and sometimes reveal devastating consequences.
Rating: Six stars.
