Really grim.

Find all the sanctimoniousness about City very odd. FFP is a bullshit cartel racket. There's a reason to hate City but it's not 'the charges'. People don't seem really to care about the success all being based on blood money, just that they spent too much blood money and made the Big Clubs feel sad

Great day. Made all the sweeter by seeing sadface Keith Starmer watching his boys get hammered. Only disappointment was not seeing Rice get the red he deserved for a petulant, retaliatory, off the ball attack on Yalcouye right at the end #bhafc

We missed Hinsh and Rutter. With Gross way off it in the first half too we could barely string two passes together and Leeds should have been out of sight. Both full backs poor. OTOH Babis was fun, Yalcouye good, Gross back to himself and leading the fightback after half time. Draw seems fair #bhafc

Same old England. Can't shake that loser mentality against the really top teams.

Round of 16 has been 100% pure satisfaction - Morocco setting new highs for African football - France beating an incredibly dirty Paraguay - England winning in a classic - Ronaldo dumped out - Haaland embarrassing Gabriel and Neymar - Cheating US pigs eating shit Don't let us down tonight Egypt

FIFA collaborated with the fascist Argentinian junta in '78, facilitating blatant cheating to help prop up the regime, in one of the most shameful episodes in world cup history. So yeah, I'd say Argentina is a really good parallel for this year's "USMNT".

I don't think the average American is more stupid than a citizen of any other nation. But their confident pronouncements on subjects they know fuck all about definitely makes it seem that way.

Preferred Arsenal to most of the other 'big teams' before this season, but they've been incredibly graceless winners.

After the disappointments of Hearts, Arsenal, (probably) Spurs, we the footballing public deserve to get what we want at least this one time. Today, I'm asking the Southampton appeal panel to not spoil the fun.

The entire point of this project was to detach the left from libs and Sensible Moderates, then form a crushing electoral bloc with Reasonable Tories that would enjoy a long, dominant reign as the Natural Party of Government. Let’s check in on that genius plan and see how it’s going.

Say what you want about Chelsea fans but when they were winning stuff playing ugly they said 'dgaf we're winning' and they meant it. Arsenal fans are incredibly needy. They can't just enjoy winning, they need everyone to be nice and ignore that they're horrible to watch.

The lobby journos are slavering for Streeting, but are conscious it would be too brazenly absurd to kick Starmer out over this, only to replace him with someone even more embroiled in it. They'll wait for an issue where they can paint Starmer as being too soft on the left, and oust him over that.

Swebb @hhledger.bsky.social · 09/02/2026
Pour one out for the lobby journos today. Whatever else you think about McSweeney, he really had them wrapped round his little finger. "Yes he lied shamelessly and frequently, but it was the mean, silly left that forced him to do it"

I think the last 10 years have shown that the infamous Jerry Sadowitz joke about Gary Glitter ("he's one of our most famous rock stars, he should be allowed to fuck whoever he wants") is in fact, what many of the elite actually believe.

Concise summary: "Is Trump a fascist? Yes, according to the first 5 sources I checked, but I had already decided the answer was 'no'. So I kept looking until I found one source that with a technicality we could disqualify him on, and ta-da, a headline the reassures our readers"

We've watched Encanto about 6 times these holidays. Eldest obsessed. Feels appropriate though.
The bit in Encanto where the unarmed family patriarch is killed by soldiers on horseback. The soldiers are labelled 'the CIA'

The idea that centrists demand 'vision' is very amusing. Centrists dislike him for failing to deliver on his promise: a technocratic managerial correction to get the status quo working smoothly again. (Besides at least half the centre still likes him, that's why his approval isn't -100%)

Let's imagine for a moment Paul Ovenden had resigned for saying horrific anti Semitic things about a prominent Jewish politician. In that scenario does he still get handed a platform to hold forth about the state of the nation in The Times and Radio 4?

It's a workmanlike run through of stuff that's obvious to most thinking people. And it misses one very key point: You don't get establishment figures in the press/socials/TV defending the actions of the UAE or China. Israel's prominent apologists fuel a cycle of (justifiable) outrage.

As someone with a level of passing professional familiarity, the answer (which is pretty obvious to anyone thinking about it): all of that tracking is carried out by a huge array of different bodies, private and public. Joining up the data to one Big Brother view is basically impossible right now.

The fault line between the 'court' and 'country' factions (i.e. affluent and posh free marketeers vs. nostalgic Little Englanders) was always there but the former were the dominant partner. Brexit flipped that on its head and now they can't resolve the inherent ideological conflict between them.

There is no such thing as a 'credible alternative' though, because the British establishment has clearly shown it will unite to ratfuck anyone left of centre. I'd like to move on from Corbyn too, but be serious - there's no magic leader waiting out there who can beat the system.
