Fleece's (coerced) sermon to the sharks in Moby-Dick is an astonishing moment in long US histories of love and theft; @robdelaney.bsky.social and I try to bring our well-governed selves to sharkish waters. It's been such a gift to be in conversation with Rob and with listeners about M-D's worlds!

I broke my personal rule in not engaging with any agentic/generative a.i. ever because a polar art exhibition offered a conversation with a glacier as if glaciers don’t already speak as per pan-Indigenous knowledge and found that the man who made the glacier a.i. gave the Thwaites glacier a sexy baby ASMR vocal fry lady voice which is what I deserve for breaking my personal rule in not engaging with any agent/generative a.i. ever.

6-8 sperm whales to hate would be a real headache for your classic monomaniac 😞

There was sort of a loud thud.
The whole boat was pushed sideways. We looked out to our port side, and there were six to eight, a pod of whales there.

Join us, fellow lounging gentlefolk of Lima! “Brit” was my favorite chapter when I first read Moby-Dick at age 17. (I went to my 35th high school reunion last weekend and more than one classmate noted that not everyone makes their high school summer reading assignment their entire personality.)

This is why I have now embraced my unadulterated, cringe-worthy, faith and belief in the truly unique ability of humans to be humans and to express their humanity in art and self-reflection. And I include all humanities disciplines in the “self-reflection” part.

Episode 4 of Exploring Moby-Dick is up--here is @robdelaney.bsky.social making a terrific point about why Bulkington only hangs around for a six-inch chapter (bc he's a normal guy in a novel of weird little guys) exploringthegreats.com/moby-dick for video and audio of the podcast
Screenshot of the youtube recording of Exploring Moby-Dick, showing Rob Delaney making a terrific point about Bulkington in Moby-Dick. Transcript: s quite sound and well-designed, it wouldn't blow my mind if Melville didn't abandon Bulington, but rather was like, "Hey, the normal hero gets us away from land and then adios, amigo. We don't really need you anymore because this is not your realm."
5:425 minutes, 42 seconds That is a fantastic reading and once again another one of the joys of being in conversation about Moby Dick with new people. Yeah. Right.Transcript of Exploring Moby-Dick exchange in which Rob and Hester talk about Bulkington as a normal guy in a novel of weird little guys (and thus why Bulkington can't hang around): I mean, he's like a normal guy you want to be around, which this book is not really [laughter] swollen with those types of people.
No, it's a weird little guys are central to this novel. [laughter]
