Hoshi-wajo standing wooden statue. 11th century, Japan. The wooden flesh of his forehead and nose splits open like a parting curtain, unveiling the calm, serene face of a Bodhisattva emerging from within the mortal shell. In his right hand, raised in a gentle gesture of instruction
Carved from a single block of timber, a monk standing in solemn monastic robes reveals a miraculous inner metamorphosis through a deep vertical cleft down the center of his head and face. The wooden flesh of his forehead and nose splits open like a parting curtain, unveiling the calm, serene face of a Bodhisattva emerging from within the mortal shell. In his right hand, raised in a gentle gesture of instruction, and his left hand, holding a slender ritual water vase (suibin), the figure exudes a quiet, poised presence. The aged surface of the sculpture is etched with deep vertical wood grain, tool marks, and age-worn fissures that catch dramatic, directional light, capturing the physical tension between the outer human countenance and the divine radiance hidden within.
Dating to 11th-century Heian-period Japan, this extraordinary wooden sculpture depicts Hōshō Wajō (the Chinese monk Baozhi, 418–514 CE), a renowned Buddhist master of the Southern Liang Dynasty celebrated for his eccentric wisdom and miraculous deeds. According to Japanese Buddhist folklore recorded in collections such as the Konjaku Monogatarishū, when Emperor Wu of Liang sent court painters to capture the monk's portrait, Baozhi used his fingers to rend open the skin of his face, revealing the Eleven-Headed Guanyin (Jūichimen Kannon) beneath to demonstrate that true Buddhahood cannot be captured by superficial physical likeness. Sculpted in the ichiboku-zukuri (single-block wood carving) technique, this work represents a pinnacle of Japanese religious monozukuri (artisanal mastery), translating a literary legend of spiritual transfiguration into a startling, physical masterpiece of sacred art.

Deer Spirit. Edo Period, Japan. 1615-1868.
Standing atop a swirling, golden cloud formation against a vast expanse of deep indigo, a sacred white stag turns its head in quiet, alert grace. Adorned with a ceremonial harness and an ornate saddle (kura) fitted with delicate brass bells, the stag bears upon its back a branching sacred tree (sakaki). Rising above the foliage is a luminous, oversized golden disk representing the sacred mirror, fringed by fluttering white paper streamers (shide) and cascading clusters of wisteria. In the upper register, the dark, forested ridge of sacred Mount Mikasa rises beneath a deep sky holding a glowing celestial orb, its forested slopes cradling partially hidden shrine roofs and white blossom clusters. The high-contrast harmony between the brilliant gold leaf (kinhaku), the pristine white coat of the messenger, and the light-absorbing indigo field creates a striking visual hymn to divine epiphany.
Executed during the Edo period (1615–1868), this painting belongs to the venerated genre of Kasuga Shika Mandara (Kasuga Deer Mandala), a devotional art form born from the syncretic fusion of Shinto and Buddhist beliefs (shinbutsu shūgō). Centered on the Kasuga Grand Shrine in Nara, these mandalas honor the divine messenger (shinroku) of the deity Takemikazuchi no Mikoto, who according to legend traveled to Nara riding upon the back of a sacred white deer. The gold disk surmounting the sakaki branch symbolizes the manifestation deities of Kasuga (Kasuga Daimyōjin), operating under the honji suijaku doctrine wherein Shinto kami are understood as local avatars of universal Buddhas. The cascading wisteria directly honors the ancestral tutelary deity of the powerful Fujiwara clan. The delicate mineral pigments, gold foil gilding, and precise line-work exhibit the high achievement of Edo religious monozukuri (artisanal mastery in sacred painting), designed to serve as a portable focus for private worship and contemplation.

An ancient stairway was said to be a portal to parallel worlds. Echoes of different times converged on every step.
Photo by Rodrigo Pederzini. A woman in a flowing white dress ascends a spiral stone staircase inside an ancient, moss-covered well. The cylindrical structure, lined with arched openings and weathered stone, leads the eye upward to an open sky framed by twisted branches. Light filters through the greenery above, casting a mystical glow on the damp walls, evoking a sense of mystery and hidden history.

Waterfal Bridge, Takachiho Gorge, Japan
Plunging down a dark, sheer cliff of columnar basalt, the cascading curtain of Manai Falls (Manai-no-taki) shimmers in a veil of fine spray before merging into the quiet, dark waters of the Gokase River. Framed by towering, moss-draped rock faces that rise like natural ramparts, the high arch of a stone bridge spans the canyon, its silhouette crowned by a canopy of autumn foliage shifting from rich emerald to radiant amber. Deep within the chasm, light filters down from the high forest above, illuminating a small rowboat drifting near the sunlit bend where the river recedes into the distance.

Carved over millennia by the Gokase River flowing through ancient volcanic lava streams from Mount Aso, Takachiho Gorge (高千穂峡) in Miyazaki Prefecture stands as one of Kyushu’s most sacred natural monuments. In Shinto tradition, Takachiho is venerated as the legendary site of Tenson Kōrin—the divine descent of Ninigi-no-Mikoto, grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, sent from the high heavenly realm (Takamagahara) to bring order and harmony to the earthly land. Manai Falls itself is steeped in myth; according to local lore, when the region lacked water, the deity Ameno Oshihito-no-Mikoto transported water from a celestial spring to feed the waterfall. The sheer, hexagonal basalt pillars (kyōjō-setsujo) formed by the rapid cooling of lava embody the ancient Japanese reverence for kami residing directly within dramatic, elemental landforms.

The digital world is a binary one; it’s either on or off. Analog is more nuanced; it’s the in-between spaces where magic often happens. - John Maeda
PHOTO by Andrea Piacquadio. A historic astronomical clock with a vivid, multicolored face is mounted on a stone tower. Golden Roman numerals and zodiac signs encircle the dial, while intricate metal hands and an orb mark time and celestial positions. Figures of a skeleton and other characters flank the clock, part of its animated hourly performance. The structure is richly detailed with gothic carvings, contrasting with the clock’s vibrant blue, teal, and amber hues. Sunlight glints softly on the glass and gold, enhancing the clock’s timeless elegance.

We must recover the sense of the majesty of creation, and the ability to be worshipful in its presence. For I don't doubt that it is only on the condition of humility and reverence before the world that our species will be able to remain in it. ― Wendell Berry #ForestFriday #scape #ECK #photography
The image captures a sun-dappled, open pine forest floor where ancient, rugged bedrock gently breaks through a carpet of soft green moss and dry pine needles.
Large, rounded gray boulders covered in patches of pale lichen and velvety moss anchor the foreground. Tiny tufts of bright green grass grow right out of the crevices in the stone, showing how life finds a way in every corner.
Tall, slender pine trees stretch high into the sky, their reddish-brown bark rough and textured. Their branches reach out like protective arms, covered in clusters of soft green needles.
The space feels incredibly open, airy, and peaceful—the kind of place where you can smell the sweet, earthy scent of warm pine resin and hear the gentle whisper of a breeze high up in the treetops.

In the quietude of silence, the enigma of inner worlds beckons.
Photo by Kyle Roxas. A lone tree stands partially submerged in a tranquil lake, its bare branches adorned with resting birds. The water’s surface mirrors the soft hues of the sky, blending shades of pink and lavender. In the background, snow-capped mountains rise, their peaks catching the last light of the day. The scene is serene, almost otherworldly, where time seems to slow, and silence carries the whispers of the wind.
