The gate of Bishamontang, Emissary Santo, Yamashina District, Kyoto City
Framed by a blazing canopy of Japanese maples (momiji), a steep stone pathway (chokushimichi) rises toward a dark wooden gate, its steps completely buried beneath a thick carpet of scarlet foliage. Slender bamboo handrails flank the stone stairs, leading the eye along a dramatic linear perspective toward the imperial messenger gate at the crest of the slope. Overhead, interlocking branches filter the light, casting a warm crimson glow over the damp stone and moss-covered embankments. The scene evokes an intimate sensory atmosphere: the crisp mountain air of a Kyoto morning, the faint scent of damp moss and aged cedar, the soft crunch of fallen leaves underfoot, and the profound, reverent hush of an ancient temple precinct.
Located at Bishamon-do Temple in the Yamashina District of Kyoto, this approach—known as the chokushimichi (Imperial Messenger Path)—is renowned for its late-autumn sando (shrine approach), where fallen leaves form an iconic momiji no jūtan (maple carpet). Originally founded in 703 AD by the monk Gyōki and re-established at its present site in 1665, Bishamon-dō is a distinguished monozeki temple (traditionally presided over by members of the imperial family or high nobility). The Chokushimon Gate at the top of the stairs was reserved for official imperial envoys, reflecting the sanctuary's esteemed lineage. The seamless integration of stone masonry, timber architecture, and natural forest contours reflects the supreme craft of Japanese zōen (landscape architecture) and monozukuri (artisanal mastery), designed to celebrate the subtle shifts of the seasonal calendar.

Japanese graffiti ,Shibuya, Tokyo
Painted directly onto a textured, off-white stucco exterior wall, this urban mural blurs the boundary between traditional decorative painting and contemporary street art. At its center, a painted vertical hanging scroll (kakejiku) rendered in ochre and earth tones displays a delicate study of crimson plum blossoms (koubai). In a clever trompe-l'œil illusion, gnarled plum branches burst outward beyond the scroll's visual borders, trailing pale pink blooms across the rough plaster. To the left, a modern outdoor water heater—bearing a swift, black marker tag—and exposed utility piping create a sharp, tactile contrast against the organic elegance of the painted flora. The scene evokes a distinct urban sensory atmosphere: the cool air of a Shibuya backstreet, the coarse grain of weathered stucco, and the quiet surprise of encountering seasonal beauty mounted beside industrial utility.
Situated within the alleyways of Shibuya, this piece exemplifies Tokyo's evolving street art landscape, where classical Japanese artistic motifs (kachō-ga, or flower-and-bird genre painting) are recontextualized on concrete and plaster. Traditionally, the kakejiku was displayed inside a home's tokonoma (display alcove) to mark seasonal transitions; here, the mural democratizes the alcove, bringing seasonal contemplation out into the public sphere. The plum blossom (ume) holds deep historical significance as the first flower to bloom amidst late-winter cold, symbolizing endurance, courage, and spiritual renewal.

at Hyakusaiji temple, Shiga @Shinji Aratani
Spanning the calm, dark surface of a reflective pond, heavy rectangular stone slabs (sawatobi-ishi) form a crisp geometric bridge connecting rough-hewn granite boulders along the water’s edge. The water below is deep and mirror-like, capturing dark, subdued reflections of the surrounding rockwork and mossy embankments. In the background, weathered stone steps rise through tiered hillside plantings, where rounded shrubs and lichen-draped rocks merge seamlessly into the shadows of the garden foliage. Rendered in muted forest greens, wet slate greys, and deep earthy tones, the scene evokes a tactile sense of cool, damp air, the silent weight of ancient masonry, and the pristine quiet of an untouched sanctuary.
Photographed by Shinji Aratani, this image captures a secluded corner of Hyakusai-ji (Hyakusaiji Temple) in Shiga Prefecture, one of the historic Tendai Buddhist temples comprising the famous Kotō Sanzan group. Established in 606 CE by Prince Shōtoku to serve immigrants from the Korean Baekje (Hyakusai) kingdom, Hyakusai-ji boasts a history spanning over fourteen centuries amidst the foothills of the Suzuka Mountain range. The temple's celebrated pond-strolling garden (chisen-kaiyūshiki) is renowned for its dramatic utilization of natural mountain topography and masterly stone arrangements (ishigumi). The deliberate placement of raw and chiseled stone elements exemplifies the peak of Japanese environmental monozukuri (artisanal mastery in spatial design), wherein human craftsmanship harmonizes with the organic contours of the natural environment.

A Crane in Water, a traditional Japanese ink painting created by master artist Kanō Motonobu (1476–1559) during the Muromachi period.
Wading through rippling, shallow waters, a solitary crane (tsuru) arches its neck in a poised, contemplative curve while extending a single wing aloft in a dramatic, vertical sweep. The composition relies upon a masterful range of monochrome ink tones (sumi-e), utilizing razor-sharp, fine line-work to trace individual wing feathers and delicate legs, contrasted against rich, velvety black washes along the throat, crown, and wingtips. To the left, tall aquatic plants with broad, multi-lobed leaves rise along the edge of the frame, their dark-veined surfaces echoing the rhythmic curves of the bird's plumage. Gentle, stylized concentric lines etched into the lower ground delineate the soft movement of water, capturing a silent, breathless instant within a cool, secluded marshland.
Created during the Muromachi period (1336–1573) by the celebrated master Kanō Motonobu (1476–1559), this hanging scroll exemplifies the foundational style of the Kanō school of painting. Motonobu was instrumental in synthesizing the austere, monochrome ink-wash techniques (suibokuga) imported from Song and Yuan dynasty China with the fluid, decorative line-work of native Japanese yamato-e traditions. In Japanese cultural iconography, the crane (tsuru) stands as a sacred emblem of longevity, nobility, and transcendent purity, frequently associated with immortal realms in Daoist and Zen Buddhist thought. Motonobu’s rigorous brush discipline demonstrates a monumental contribution to painterly monozukuri (artisanal mastery and structural design), establishing a formalized visual vocabulary of stroke types that would define Japanese court and samurai patronage for centuries.
