A #Roman cheese press, found at Balmuildy fort on the #AntonineWall (Scotland). The cheese was put in the press & pressed down by a weight, forcing out any moisture through the holes. The resulting cheeses would have the concentric circle pattern from the press 🧀 #Archaeology #AncientBlueSky

How do you pick just one? Rest well, Wendell Berry.
Our Real Work
Wendell Berry

It may be that when we no longer know what to do
we have come to our real work,
and that when we no longer know which way to go
we have come to our real journey.
The mind that is not baffled is not employed.
The impeded stream is the one that sings.

Secondly, the UK is only major country that counts students as immigrants. It is ABSURD. International students pay 3-4x in fees what British students pay. Comes to £20K+ a year. It is completely ridiculous we treat them as some sort of scroungers when they are helping keep universities afloat.

Pitta of the Day: Eared Pitta 📷 Ayuwat Jearwattanakanok
Photo of bird perched on ground. Description from ebird: ‘This handsome pitta is about the color of a chocolate chip cookie. Only the warmer-colored male is “eared”, possessing the speckled silvery tufts on either side of the head. The female is darker, with extensive black speckling on the underparts. Both sexes have an elegant black mask extending from the bill base to the nape. Forages unobtrusively on the floor of lowland rainforests and dry deciduous forests. Gives a long, drawn-out whistle with the second half being deflected upwards.’

Waterhen by Ohara Koson (1877-1945), Japan
by the master artist Ohara Koson (1877–1945) depicts a solitary waterhen (Moorhen) standing poised in a shallow marsh. Renowned for his exceptional ability to capture the lifelike textures and quiet dignity of the natural world, Koson was a leading figure in the early 20th-century Shin-hanga (New Prints) movement, which revived traditional ukiyo-e collaborative workshop methods while introducing subtle Western techniques of light and perspective.

The composition centers on the volumetric, rounded body of the waterhen, which is rendered with exquisite gradations of grey, charcoal, and black ink (bokashi) to simulate the soft, dense texture of its plumage. The bird is captured in a classic, serene posture, balancing gracefully on its long, segmented left leg while its right leg is tucked up close to its breast. Its head is turned back over its shoulder, revealing a bright, attentive golden-orange eye and a matching short, pointed orange beak adorned with a soft red frontal shield at the brow. A small flash of white feathers accents the underside of its upturned tail, providing a sharp contrast to the deeper, velvety tones of its wings.

The setting is minimalist and atmospheric, utilizing a soft, cream-colored background that evokes a misty, early morning or overcast day. The bird stands at the edge of a tranquil body of water, its single leg casting a fine, vertical reflection onto the mirror-like surface. Faint, horizontal washes of pale grey indicate gentle ripples in the water, while a few small, oval lily pads float quietly nearby. Rising behind the bird on the right side of the frame are slender, delicate stalks of wild marsh grass or reeds, executed in soft shades of sage green. The fine, linear strokes of the grass blades provide a beautiful geometric counterpoint to the soft, curved silhouette of the waterhen.

a light brown pit bull wearing a maroon shirt sits with her ears pinned back and looks up in our direction. a hand is holding a chewed up certificate in the foreground. the signed certificate is for completion of basic obedience, and it's filled out to Maya la Pitbull. in her obedience class she was taught not to eat homework, but no one said anything about diplomas.
