The Metaphysics Of Narrative: M. John Harrison’s Uncanny Canon | The Quietus
M. John Harrison has long laboured under the unfortunate moniker of being a ‘writer’s writer’. This has always been reviewer code for ‘writer not many people read’. Active since the sixties, first pub...

slightly confused by all the coverage of this; my understanding of the tourist tax was it was to mostly redistribute money from those who profit from tourism to improving services for citizens who live here all year round?

it’s not surprising that Olga Tokarczuk has played with AI given her work has always been engaged with the mystical dimensions of new technologies but more galling that she seems totally blind to the environmental devastation and the labour exploitation it’s founded upon.

i understand these lists are more helpful as provocations and this is by an English language publication but it’s nevertheless pretty miserable that of all 26 novels published after 1970 only four of them are non-anglophone and two of those are by the same author. www.theguardian.com/books/ng-int...

I'm Lead Judge of the James Tait Black Prize for Fiction, awarded at University of Edinburgh since 1919 and due to be announced this month. But the university is currently withholding 100% of my pay for participating in a marking and assessment boycott. So, at present, there will be no prize.

utterly astonished to see an Edinburgh bookshop make a plea for volunteers to perform the same duties as their paid booksellers
Lunch cover and bookselling – regular days – 1pm-3pm

We particularly need cover on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, but we hope to have volunteers for every day of the week. Your duties would involve shelving books and dressing shelves and using our till, covering a brief lunch break when the staffer on duty won’t be on the shop floor (but will be near at hand!) chatting with customers, recommending books, writing staff picks &c. You’ll have the opportunity to learn all about the world of bookselling and all the behind the scenes stuff going on in bookshops!
