The Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) and NGC 2023 - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - flic.kr/p/rhRRAz
In the Shadow of the Horsehead - Deep 26 Hour Version

I recently added a Ha filter to my collection and promptly put it to the test by soaking up a decent amount of data on the Horsehead nebula. I wanted to improve on my initial attempt on this target from 2014. One of the issues was that I'd like to show the delicate 'curtain' structure of IC 434, the bright glowing hydrogen emission that the Horsehead is silhouetted against.
This also prompted me to add more data to the LRGB channels as well in order to bring out the faint dust details better, so all together with last year's data I ended up with over 26 hours of data which I completely reprocessed and assembled into this updated version.
I'm pleased that the result has higher resolution and more depth than last years' effort. The colours are also richer and more refined and in particular the Ha curtains now stand out above and around the Horsehead.

About the image:
The Horsehead Nebula (also known as Barnard 33) is without doubt one of the most recognized and fascinating objects in the sky. This iconic feature is formed by the sharp outline of a dark dust cloud, with a remarkable likeness to a horse's head, silhouetted against a brightly glowing patch of ionized Hydrogen (IC434) that is being energized by the hard ultraviolet radiation from nearby Sigma Orionis, a...

Happy 99th birthday to the man who gave voice to the wild. 🎉 Sir David Attenborough, thank you for a lifetime dedicated to the natural world, and for sharing its story with wisdom, wonder, and grace. You've inspired generations to fall in love with nature.
This photograph captures Sir David Attenborough seated outdoors on the rugged terrain of Skomer Island. Behind him, the ocean and coastal cliffs form a scenic backdrop under a clear sky. Sir David, dressed in a khaki jacket and light trousers, looks towards the camera with a gentle expression, exuding a sense of warmth, calm, and wisdom. Around him, puffins can be seen flying and perched on the rocky ground, illuminated in rays of golden sunlight as the sun sets behind the cliffs.

🧵 This intriguing image shows two distant interacting galaxies, collectively called Arp 142, resembling a penguin guarding an egg. The image combines data from NASA's Spitzer (infrared light) and Hubble (visible light) telescopes. ➡️ www.spitzer.caltech.edu/image/ssc201... 🔭 🧪 #extragalactic
The image shows two distant interacting galaxies, collectively called Arp 142, resembling a penguin guarding an egg.
The "penguin" galaxy, NGC 2936, has a distorted spiral shape with bluish filaments of newly-formed hot stars and red filaments of gas and dust. The "egg" galaxy, NGC 2937, appears nearly featureless with a greenish glow from older stars and no red dust features. A blue streak of an unrelated background galaxy is visible at the top. The galaxies are set against a dark cosmic background.

the universe wishes you a happy easter, here’s the egg nebula 🌌
This colourful image shows a cosmic lighthouse known as the Egg Nebula, which lies around 3000 light-years from Earth.

The Egg Nebula is a ‘preplanetary nebula’. These objects occur as a dying star’s hot remains briefly illuminates material it has expelled, lighting up the gas and dust that surrounds it.

Although the dying star is hidden behind the thick dust lane that streaks down the centre of this image, it is revealed by the four lighthouse-like beams clearly visible through the veil of dust that lies beyond the central lane.

The concentric rings seen in the less dense cloud surrounding the star are due to the star ejecting material at regular intervals – typically every hundred years – during a phase of the star’s evolution just prior to this preplanetary nebula phase.

Not long after, the first mammals, our ancestors, appeared.

Are there any lists of common products with American makers/owners available? If people around the world simply shunned American products wherever vaguely practical there would be no need for self-harming counter-tariffs.

Oh, the irony is almost too rich to digest.
Peter Dutton, the self-proclaimed torchbearer of Australian leadership, looks at Donald Trump—a man who apparently believes penguins are running export markets-and thinks, "Yes, this is the intellectual giant I aspire to emulate." And Michaelia Cash, bless her, doubles down by calling Trump a "man of action," promising Australians the same brand of brilliance under Dutton. Because who wouldn't want a government that mistakes uninhabited penguin colonies for thriving trade hubs?
But wait, it gets better. Trump's tariffs, which are essentially taxes on consumers, now target Australian beef because we dared to prioritize public health over importing potentially mad cow-tainted U.S. beef. The logic? Punish Australia for not buying risky products, even though Americans themselves were buying our beef for the exact same reason. And let's not forget the mathematical wizardry behind these tariffs, which somehow managed to lump Norfolk Island and Gibraltar into the
"countries" category. Truly, the "big thinker" is redefining global trade-one nonsensical policy at a time. If this is the leadership Dutton admires, Australians might want to stock up on popcorn. It's going to be a wild ride.
