Especially stupid because there's no need to crosstab dive here. These polls are good for us.

Honestly, I don't even begrudge the selfishness as much as I begrudge the self-righteous anger when you tell these people that you disagree with them and think they're doing something bad.

if you don’t do quant analysis of the value of human life you wind up with defaults and you are not going to like the defaults.

(Also, it seems like the implication might be that a normally moral person could maybe be trusted with his level of power. I think that’s probably wrong. I don’t want to put words in anyone’s mouth, though; I could be misinterpreting.)

I guess my issue is that the argument seems to be “Amodei is abnormally amoral and therefore cannot be trusted with the level of power he has.” Maybe Amodei is abnormally amoral, but I don’t think the excerpted text evidences that.

In any case, that point is well taken, and I do think that neutrality should be the strong presumption. I’m not even sold on the author’s weighting tbh. But I don’t think it’s *evil* and don’t even think it’s wrong to share this thought process as just Some Guy.

I think that’s certainly *a* way to defend the practice, but I’m not convinced it was doing more work than the normative view that one ought to protect those who cannot protect themselves (or even the consideration that children have more expected years left to live).

Really? Were the people on the Titanic being monstrous when they prioritized women and children over men?

Henry @henryelections.bsky.social · 13/10/2026
Yeah I'm very confused by the level of outrage over this. Like you might disagree with this conclusion but it doesn't seem like the author hates babies or something, at least from the excerpted text. If the objection is that he's weighting lives and that's per se evil, I just think that's wrong tbh

Yeah Montana is ~as red as Nebraska and no one says the Democrats should have run against Osborn on principle.

this is a very dishonestly framed article given that in the actual text of the article it acknowledges that he confirmed he stands by sponsoring the equality act after giving the answer the headline refers to, a fact that directly contradicts the headline

Kansas is significantly bluer than Montana, though. The closest analogue is Nebraska, and I don’t think a Democrat would be as competitive as Osborn is.

Yeah like stealing this analogy but if I found out someone had a very realistic life size human doll in their house they regularly beat the shit out of, I’d avoid that person, and not because I think the doll is conscious

Which obviously isn’t to excuse BSW or to say that people on the extreme left can’t be morons or traitors. They very often are. But I would say that every ideological camp has got those.
000
Henry @henryelections.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Yeah but it’s not obvious that BSW is more “extremist” than Linke. Honestly I’d argue the opposite. It’s also worth noting that iirc the AfD president *probably* got elected with the help of (center-right) CDU defections

But at the same time, it is meaningful that almost everyone (or every adult, anyway) who is subject to French law can vote for French lawmakers, a smaller but similarly overwhelming percentage applies to America, and the Israeli percentage is like 50% with no signs of improving. That is bad to me.

Henry @henryelections.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Incidentally, I just got into a generally regrettable conversation with two rather uncharitable interlocutors on this, and let it be known that I do not think that voting is the end-all-be-all of colonial status.
210
Henry @henryelections.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Actually, New Caledonians can vote for President and Parliament. I still think it would be defensible to call it a colony, though. The public sentiment on being part of France there is mixed at best, as I'm sure you know.

Conservatives view their children basically as their property. Teaching their children about something they'd prefer they not know about is, to them, no more or less objectionable than someone painting their car a different color without their permission or something.

This is just a basic error. The correct thing to do whether you're American aristocracy or white trash is be very good at the thing you do without trying, try hard on top of that, and then pretend you aren't trying, which no one will believe but is necessary to convince them you can still hang.

E.g. Beto lost a close race and still lost by hundreds of thousands of votes. If these were all being sent to like Alaska and Maine, maybe cause for alarm. If they selected for any criteria other than "in a small swing state" I think we're probably in the clear
