Breastfeeding is important work. A study computes the economic value of breastfeeding in England throughout history, as a share of GDP. Its proportional value has consistently exceeded 0.1% of GDP [AR2.1]and peaked in the year 1540 at 6.58%. In PNAS: ow.ly/ufGl50ZRuce

Happy to announce that “Valuing five centuries of unpaid breastfeeding in England”, with Jane Humphries, is published in PNAS: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2600844123. Breastfeeding benefits both children and mothers, but its economic value often escapes notice because it is unpaid labour (1/8)

This is a picture of two women from the Vernon Cadet Training Centre, which holds summer programming for 12-18 year olds to develop skills on the way to adulthood. Unlike Secretary Hegseth, they do not deserve contempt or ridicule.

With the administration refusing to process diversity visas, effectively terminating access to asylum, ending almost all refugee admissions, and now refusing to process employment and family based petitions, there does not currently seem to be a mechanism to legally immigrate to the U.S. from abroad

Sorry, what? The US didn’t just demand the right to restrict us from making trade deals with other countries - they demanded that they be able to force Canada to impose new tariffs on other countries and set the rates of those tariffs. That’s just agreeing to let the US control our economic policy.

Dans la chanson, l'ami qui "tombe" ne tombe pas parce qu'il a trébuché sur un caillou. Il tombe parce qu'il a été fusillé par un milicien qui plus tard fondra le Front National.

It can be verified in 2 seconds that foreign nationals are not eligible for student loans except where they have substantial residential ties. Why do journalists cover this stuff as if it's actually policy and not performative cruelty? www.timeshighereducation.com/news/reform-...

Louis Henderson and Jane Humphries argue in the OxREP that care labour is systematically neglected in conventional economic metrics. They illustrate how breastfeeding has been historically unrecognised despite its crucial contribution to infant health. doi.org/10.1093/oxre...

Excited to announce new OA article with Jane Humphries, 'The economic history of caring labour'. Using historical data on infant feeding, we show how breastfeeding acted as a buffer against weak public health systems and how scientific and technological change reshaped this care work over time.
