What are some of your favorite features in Java 27? Mine's surely going to be compact object headers. Reduce the heap of your programs by 10-20% without changing application logic or code. :D

You’ve gotta use AI because it’s the future. But also it’ll take your job. But also it’ll create a paradise on earth and solve most of our problems. But also it’ll end humanity soon. But also you’ll get left behind if you don’t use it right now.

Thanks to coding agents, Jenesis has matured at a speed I did not expect, and it has become the build tool for Java I would have liked to see a decade ago. I had agents build hundreds of projects, and it works, so try it out. I moved the entire shebang to a GitHub org: github.com/jenesis

The more AI I use for writing code, the more I come to the conclusion that this is doing the wrong thing faster. AI Coding for prototyping, learning, reviewing is great. For everything else, it leaves developers with complex indirections, hand-rolled duplications and an unmaintainable blob.

Did you know? No need to always rebuild a container image when the base changes. We can rebase it: replace the runtime base and keep the upper layers unchanged. Buildpacks make it a first-class operation with pack rebase. BuildKit can do smth similar with COPY --link and a cache.

This is one of the most useful ideas I ever learned. www.paulgraham.com/top.html
July 2010

I realized recently that what one thinks about in the shower in the morning is more important than I'd thought. I knew it was a good time to have ideas. Now I'd go further: now I'd say it's hard to do a really good job on anything you don't think about in the shower.

Everyone who's worked on difficult problems is probably familiar with the phenomenon of working hard to figure something out, failing, and then suddenly seeing the answer a bit later while doing something else. There's a kind of thinking you do without trying to. I'm increasingly convinced this type of thinking is not merely helpful in solving hard problems, but necessary. The tricky part is, you can only control it indirectly. [1]

I think most people have one top idea in their mind at any given time. That's the idea their thoughts will drift toward when they're allowed to drift freely. And this idea will thus tend to get all the benefit of that type of thinking, while others are starved of it. Which means it's a disaster to let the wrong idea become the top one in your mind.

ffmpeg is an amazing piece of software, but it should *always* be run in a sandbox when processing untrusted input. Modern browsers decode videos in a sandbox for the same reason. Handling complex codecs in an entirely secure way remains an unsolved problem in software engineering.
