for real though the "model welfare" people who are worried about the ethical treatment of nonsentient computer programs are absolutely deranged, very well-funded, and extremely dangerous; is also the core ideology of Anthropic
One of the most heated discussions occurring on X at the moment is about the ethics of a GitHub project in which a person is running Saw-like “torture” and “pain” experiments on a series of locally hosted large language models, causing a series of effective altruists and people who believe LLMs are sentient to beg GitHub to delete the project on the grounds that the AI is suffering and that this glorified text adventure game is somehow cruel. The saga is an outgrowth of several recent viral papers and blog posts that have sparked a wildly tiresome conversation about AI consciousness and the idea of “model welfare,” which is essentially worrying about the “mental health” of AI bots and agents.

Look who's getting on the Fauci bandwagon, how unexpected. Feeling pretty good about my prediction rn Notice the classic Weinstein bros. move: "your conspiracy is valid and important, but the real story is my higher-order galaxybrain thing"
Sabine Hossenfelder tweets a picture of a tweet by twitter user Jason Locasale from October 30 2025, who says:

A friend from academia, someone I haven’t spoken to in years, saw my account and reached out privately. They asked to stay anonymous but wrote:

“Of course I agree with what you say. Anyone with a head on their shoulders would agree.
The question is, where did all the reasonable people who once existed vanish?
Of course, given my situation, I can’t be vocal. I just quietly do my science and boycott pseudoscience.”

Messages like this are common. Reasonable people have learned that speaking up comes with real costs. They know the academic system punishes honesty

Sabine says:

All the focus on Fauci is burying the more important story, which is that scientists enforcing a common narrative to the detriment of truth has become extremely common. It's a strong case of in-group behavior in academia that, I believe, most of them are not fully aware of.

As
@LocasaleLab
 put it so aptly "the academic system punishes honesty".

And this is the real story: This isn't just about Fauci. Fauci is just an extreme and very visible example in a case that has attracted a lot of public attention. But misleading the public about the status of scientific research has become extremely widespread.
