Mine is another frequently-cited one from around the same era: the witch in SNOW WHITE & THE SEVEN DWARFS (1937).

Yup. Maddest I’ve been since they had a Greta Garbo square for “Based on a book or play” and didn’t accept her role as the title character in the definitive adaptation of the debut novel from the first female Nobel Prize winner.

I’m very mad that selecting a Fonda title with a “&” rather than an “and” in it ruined my chance of getting grid with seven 1-percent squares. Especially since when I tried the version with the “and”, the poster that came up had the “&” in it.

My favorite British comedy duo is known on this side of the pond as Stephen Fry and Hugh Truck.

That’s what being in a band with David Byrne felt like, apparently.

I don’t know anything about NIGHT SWIM but a horror movie that came out in January 1964 is STRAIT-JACKET.

The Andy Warhol one is pretty good.

Think that’s been codified since the sixties or earlier. Even DR. STRANGELOVE’s January release was only because its original November 1963 date was postponed by an event in Dallas.

CODA premiered at Sundance if that counts, but you mean just commercial releases CASABLANCA comes to mind. I’m not sure if there’s anything in my lifetime earlier than SILENCE OF THE LAMBS in February.

I’ve seen it thrice- first on VHS and then twice in 35mm with a Castro Theatre organist accompanying. You’re in for a treat!

Somehow I missed this the other day-maybe just as exciting as THE CROWD? (Maybe moreso for Baby Peggy and Kenji Mizoguchi fans…)

Time to watch Frederick Wiseman's excellent 1983 documentary about Neiman Marcus filmed almost entirely at this flagship location. #TheStore It's currently on Kanopy but you can also buy a copy on DVD directly from ZipporahFilms.com.

From the text it looks like these are screening as digital files, so am I correct in interpreting the “16mm” designation next to each film listed as intended to describe the original shooting format?

Wash the idea of it being a horror movie directed by the guy who’d make NOSFERATU a year later out of your mind, and you may be able to enjoy its depiction of a group of backbiting bluebloods holed up in a high-ceilinged manor (not really a “castle” as we think of the word.) On Kanopy.

Fun to hear Jeremy talk about some 111-year-old movies (though he misses the Castro Theatre’s opening year by two- it opened June 1922 with Wallace Reid vehicle ACROSS THE CONTINENT & played Chaplin’s big release from that year PAY DAY during its first month open.)

Great year for it. In addition to the obvious (COMIC BOOK CONFIDENTIAL, MISSILE, IMAGES OF THE WORLD AND INSCRIPTION OF WAR etc) I recommend OMEGA RISING WOMEN OF RASTAFARI & THE DAYS OF THE DEAD (which comes up 1988 on Letterboxd though I suspect it didn’t actually screen until Sundance 1989).

Oh you know- the same sort of probably-misguided protectiveness that made a young Wax Trax! devotee suspicious of Nine Inch Nails’ massive success. Ultimately I succumbed and went to three stops on the DOWNWARD SPIRAL tour. I’m sure I’ll feel differently by the time the Kuchar Blu-Rays get released.
