I started with a new PT for hip pain. She told me to stop crossing my legs (figure-4 ankle on knee is ok), to sit knees-apart when possible, and to avoid sitting with hips lower than knees. I made those changes and adjusted my car seat to be lower in front. Surprised to report I have less pain!

I used to practice karate, but after a nerve injury I struggled with kata crossing the midline. And then the impact became too much for my joints, so I stopped around 2019. I’m trying an introductory Tai Chi class tonight! I’ll be channeling my grandfather, who practiced in the park in Palo Alto. 💙

This is why more women don't come forward, and why more rapists aren't jailed. Because mostly-male cops and prosecutors find it more believable that a 20-yr-old would want to have sex with a room full of fraternity brothers than accept she was raped. What ever happened to common fucking sense?

I brought my container zinnias into the garage for the night because they started getting frostburned this morning. 😢 They’ve provided us with fresh cut flowers in almost every room all summer, while also feeding bees & butterflies outside. I’m not ready to say goodbye.

Yesterday I had to run an errand for my Mom. Before I left, I checked the CVS app for vaccine appts, and was able to book myself flu & Covid shots for that same afternoon. SO EASY! Normally I prefer to space them out, but I didn’t know when I’d have another chance, so I got one in each arm. 💪🏼

A key part of #dementia care is finding “contented involvement” which can be any activity or hobby, TV, gazing out the window, etc. It’s been a chore to find good, “easy” TV for Mom, she hates sitcoms. But I forgot about “Grace and Frankie”! Last year she wouldn’t rewatch, now she doesn’t remember.

FWIW I know a few teens (all genders) with POTS. Some had or still have Long Covid. I’m just glad they were able to get diagnosed. I know from personal experience how devastating a doctor visit can be when you know something’s wrong and they’ve already made up their mind about you.

Hired a #dementia #caregiver for 4 hrs ($160) so I could vote in our primary, get a fasting blood draw, buy groceries, and go to physical therapy. When the CG arrived, Mom took her hand delightedly and said, “are you one of my girls?” 😅 A far cry from the 1st visit when Mom yelled the whole time.

Mom got out of bed (rare) to look for me, so we popped her in the wheelchair and now she & I are sitting at the end of the driveway in our sun hats, listening to the wind and the river. Every 60-90 seconds, a couple of cars go by, or a few motorcycles. No bicyclists since we’ve been out here.

Spouse is driving our elder daughter down for her junior year, so as of today we’re officially empty nesters! 😳 🪹 (Besides my Mom, who lives here too…when she goes it will be a different kind of empty nest, but that’s not what I’m thinking about today.)

Sometimes I walk into my Mom‘s room where she’s lying in bed, chilling, watching music videos, and she’ll look at me with the hugest grin like I wasn’t just there 5 minutes ago. Just now she held my hands, so very excited to see me. And she knew me. Vascular #dementia is a trip. #caregiving

I’ve always thought it makes sense when an obituary thanks the deceased’s hospice team. But having been the beneficiary of #hospice support this summer, I get it now on a deeper level. I really like our hospice LNA. We have long chats after she’s visited with Mom, & it feels like friendship. 💚

The doorknob to our cellar is hard to turn, & the door sticks so you have to put a shoulder into it… It was no match for my determined Mom early this morning. Miraculously, she did not fall down the stairs. Spouse found her lying on the damp cellar floor. 🥺 She said she’d been there for years.

My brother’s been here for 3wks. He’s so good w/Mom, hanging out, giving her pills, etc. He’s going back to CA to get his car out of short term airport parking 🙄 but hopefully returning quickly because Miss 20 goes back to college next weekend and I’ll be alone again. #caregiving #dementia #hospice
