I've been thinking about this a lot lately: "Part of what makes it so easy for democracy to slip away" is that "there are a lot of features of daily life that continue to exist long after a country has stopped being a democracy": smotus.substack.com/p/liberty-ca...

"Skillful dialogue doesn't magically occur. Too many teachers stop centering dialogue because protocols & activities don't go smoothly [at first]. Effective dialogue takes iteration, reflection & patience. But, when it is built, a culture of dialogue leads the way to transformational learning." 🔥

Made a bad decision during my vacay in NOLA. A haircut. 😂☺️ I could tell she didn’t know what she was doing right away. Should have stopped her, now I’m a cropped top! Like a bowl cut. It’s bad, but it’s my first truly bad cut, so I guess I’m due. Probably should have gotten a tattoo instead. 😂

Failing charters continue to survive on state funds by converting to entirely opaque, unaccountable private schools: "The Arizona State Board for Charter Schools had monitored the school’s finances and academics, unanimously coming to the conclusion that it should be shut down."
For instance, the state never informed parents who were new to Title of Liberty and were planning to spend their voucher money there that it had previously been a charter school called ARCHES Academy — which had had its charter revoked last school year due to severe financial issues. Nor that, as a charter, it had a record of dismal academic performance, with just 13% of its students proficient in English and 0% in math in 2023.

When it was a charter (which is a type of public school), these things could be known. There was some oversight. The Arizona State Board for Charter Schools had monitored the school’s finances and academics, unanimously coming to the conclusion that it should be shut down.

I'm blown away at how radical Guskey's recommendations about grades & grading sound 30 years later: Grading & reporting aren't essential to instruction. No one method of grading and reporting serves all purposes well. Regardless of the method used, grading reporting remain inherently subjective.

It's a curious thing that The Science of Learning has everything to say about memory management and nothing to say about motivation. It's implied that the purpose of learning in school is memorization for the test, not questioning at all whether learning for the test is even the best way to learn.

When Foucault said "visibility is a trap," he could have been talking about schooling in 2024. To be visible is to be identified + labeled in vicious ways. These identifiers + labels are often life sentences--"tier 3," "below basic," "troublemaker"--so it's better to not be seen at all.
