He knew the stories, ones that usually came after more than enough Budweiser had gone around after the weekend barbecue. He knew stories of how his dad had once served time for killing a cop. He knew stories of how they used to run drugs under the guise of racing, recruiting people like him who lived for the throttle in their lungs. Hell, he even knew his mother had once been a fugitive, and she didn’t live to see her name cleared.
But none of that changed that his family's elders were adamant on not bringing their kids into the same world—not until…not unless...
They'd make Hoseok quit. He knew it. And he couldn't live with himself if he had to give it up.
Some days, Jung Hoseok felt like he had little to live for unless it was cars or his drums. He wasn't sure where that attitude came from. He'd always been a surprisingly lively child, always full of excitement. It felt like one day he'd just woken up wanting more and he knew it was all just out of reach.

"Hey," Jimin called out from his room doorway, as soon as he heard Hoseok coming up the stairs. Jimin had already said goodnight to their parents, and they never had a reason to check on him once he’d said those words. Sometimes, it was code for 'I'm not going to run into you for the rest of the night.' That's the exact reason why he hadn't hesitated to throw on some jeans instead of pajama pants, boots clutched in his hands.
"Hi," Hoseok said, as he rounded the corner, eyeing Jimin carefully. Then he groaned.
"I know. I know you've had a bad night," Jimin responded, immediately. "That's why I'm asking and not demanding. Will you please cover for me, tonight?"
"Are you actually giving me a choice or are you pretending to? Because you know, if it were up to me…"
"Don't get judgmental on me, hyung. Just answer the question. Can I count on you to have my back or not?"
Hoseok stared at Jimin for two seconds, eyes narrowed, jaw tense, and Jimin felt like guarding himself against whatever scrutiny he was sweeping Jimin with. Then Hoseok hissed something under his breath, shaking his head, and walking past Jimin. If Jimin wasn't so attuned to his brother, he might've even missed the words he whispered under his breath as he stuffed the car keys into Jimin’s hand.

Jimin drove to the same park he’d driven to the previous day, but instead of waiting outside in the abandoned darkness, he locked the car doors and stayed in his seat. His one hand remained on the keys, should the need to drive arise. His other remained on his phone.
Jimin had been waiting for seven whole minutes when he heard a knock on his window and he jumped.
"You scared me," he mumbled, sighing in relief as he finally opened the car door and got out. Immediately, a warm pair of arms went around him as a greeting. Jimin melted. How could this boy be bad news, by anyone's definition of the word? Jimin didn't care. He was probably the sweetest person Jimin had ever met. The world didn't know it, but Jungkook was a cheesy romantic at heart.
"My mistake," Jungkook laughed, not looking the least bit sorry. Jimin smacked his arm and then raised his eyebrows.
"So, what's up?" Jimin asked. "Why'd you call me here at this time of the night?"
"I've been thinking about what you said the other day, about us telling people."
Jimin immediately straightened up, eyes wide. He’d never expected Jungkook to actually pay heed to that. Jimin always brought it up and Jungkook ignored it. A nervous excitement settled low in Jimin’s belly and he bit his lip.
"And?" he asked, daring to hope.
"I want you to learn how to use a gun."
