I find it a bit funny when conservatives complain about how "woke" academia is. Those of us who actually work on research that affects marginalized groups constantly have to justify our existence to disciplines who argue that we're not "mainstream enough."

This is a real problem I’ve been having. Democrats have not been rising to the moment in the minority. Why am I expecting them to not squander a majority?

Hiring sprees for “conservative” professors is certainly a… move… in an environment where Black studies departments are being eliminated across the country, and some profs are scared to teach something as banal as Plato’s Symposium.

52 senators voted in favor of allocating an additional $70 billion to fuel ICE and Border Patrol's campaign of chaos and violence in our communities without any reforms. The House of Representatives must reject this bill and any attempts to give ICE more money to violate our rights.
Graphic reading "These senators voted to deport DACA recipients and supercharge ICE’s violence without any reforms:" Underneath, it reads the names of the 52 senators.

I found it frustrating to do legal/policy epidemiology with non-lawyers, because most non-lawyers don't care about or understand the legal idiosyncrasies that can prevent a law from having the effect you think it will. I was often encouraged to pay less attention to these types of variables.

This is why Elizabeth Emens calls "life admin" an invisible cost of being disabled. It always incenses me that no one I talk to recognizes that time I spend talking to them is time I'm not able to spend working, relaxing, or doing literally *anything else*.

Democracy will not come
Today, this year
  Nor ever
Through compromise and fear.

I have as much right
As the other fellow has
 To stand
On my two feet
And own the land.

I tire so of hearing people say,
Let things take their course.
Tomorrow is another day.
I do not need my freedom when I'm dead.
I cannot live on tomorrow's bread.

     Freedom
     Is a strong seed
     Planted
     In a great need.

     I live here, too.
     I want freedom
     Just as you.

Honestly the justices (particularly Justice Sotomayor) sound ... somewhat taken aback that they're even hearing this case. And ... same? Also - you didn't have to! You could have just issued a summary op saying "See the Fourteenth Amendment"! Even last year in the nationwide inujunction case!

I wonder how much of some people's discomfort with "eugenics was a science, and framing it as outside the histories of science is dangerous" is because they need to believe in science as moral/good. Ive yet to meet a historian who would believe this, though (I am happy to be corrected).

Like, the takeaway is to encourage ethical and humane scientific practices. Not to imagine a new version of history where the iterative process of science was not impacted by the social and political structures of the places and times in which it was happening

"eugenics and scientific or medical racism etc wasn't real science™" Be for real, come on. Science has always been part of heinous things, was implicated in and facilitated colonization, slavery, the Holocaust more. All of this IS part of the story of science. WHY are you sanitizing this?

The NYT presents this as an either-or situation and it is not. We can protect women and girls from predators and have justice for the common worker. We can protect women and girls while providing the civil rights to ALL. Rights that many shed blood and lost their lives for us to have.
