I briefly mentioned The Postal Service's Give Up recently. We played the heck out of this one at the office in 2003. Over the years, it has become a landmark, classic left-field electronic album. Love it so much, I got my hands on the Deluxe 3LPs box set. Shame Ben Gibbard never made another PS LP.

L.A.’s steep watersheds — surrounding mountain ranges that rise precipitously to 8,000+ feet in elevation — trap moisture and have periodically turned heavy rains into deadly torrents that have reshaped the region’s landscape and infrastructure. www.latimes.com/california/s...

Commentary: The approaching El Niño is scary, but L.A.'s starred in this horror movie before
The thousands of square miles of mountain watershed around L.A. -- the San Gabriels and the San Bernardinos -- are as steep as roller coasters, and the rain funnels off them in tumults.

L.A.'s 'perfect' Mediterranean weather is a birthright. Why did it disappear this summer?
It's been hot in SoCal, but at least it's a dry heat. Wait. It's not dry — at all. Locals' favorite summertime cliche has been brutally terminated by the worst humidity we've ever seen.

We may seem some genuinely extreme humidity levels along SoCal coastal plain Tue-Wed (yes, even worse than today). As Marie's tropical moisture lingers, temps of 90-100F will combine with dew points of 70F to nearly 80F (!), yielding heat index values as high as ~110F. #CAwx

Outside of local triggering (eg., aftershocks), the global distribution of big earthquakes is random in time. That means there is an average rate (15 M7+ evets/yr) but the time since the last event doesn't matter. Sometimes we see clusters - if there were no clusters, it woldn't be random.

In his 2004 book, The Anatomy of Fascism, historian Robert Paxton identified the passions that had animated fascistic political cultures over the previous 80 years. These may sound familiar.
eelings t
hem "mobilizing passions":
• a sense of overwhelming crisis beyond the reach of any traditional solutions;
• the primacy of the group, toward which one has duties superior to every right, whether individual or universal, and the subordination of the individual to it;
• the belief that one's group is a victim, a sentiment that justifies any action, without legal or moral limits, against its enemies, both internal and external;
• dread of the group's decline under the corrosive effects of individualistic liberalism, class conflict, and alien influences;
• the need for closer integration of a purer community, by consent if possible, or by exclusionary violence if necessary;
• the need for authority by natural chiefs (always male), culminating in a national chieftain who alone is capable of incarnating the group's historical destiny;
• the superiority of the leader's instincts over abstract and universal
reason;
• the beauty of violence and the efficacy of will, when they are devoted to the group's success;
