Happy to be in Bordeaux to start what feels like a 2-week European tour and showcase our work on flooding stress memory in #plantscience and more of our latest results! Looking forward to 3 days of RECROP, and hoping to see results that can promote climate-related stress resilience in plants.

We also joined this year's sporty #B2Run Freiburg event under the @uni-freiburg.de flag with most of team 👟🌱🌊 It was such a fun evening! Well done to everyone. I guess now we "deserve" to also tag along for the upcoming Freiburg annual wine-fest 😜🍷

@carlos-rc.bsky.social together with @rimchaudhury15.bsky.social designed this figure describing some of the key temporal signalling events during a flooding event that were shown to contribute to differential stress resilience 🌱🌊 #plantscience
Circular schematic illustrating signalling events before, during and after plant submergence. The figure is divided into three interconnected phases arranged around a central ring labeled “Acclimation,” “Submergence,” and “Recovery,” with ethylene (Et) positioned at the center as a key regulator. The upper left region “Acclimation” depicts environmental flooding anticipation cues, including rain, waterlogging, humidity, and mechano-stimulation, leading to activation of EIN3 signalling. The upper right half, labeled as “Hypoxia,” represents submerged conditions with blue shading. Ethylene signalling through EIN2 stabilizes EIN3 and promotes accumulation of PGB1, which limits nitric oxide (NO)-dependent degradation of ERFVII transcription factors. Translation is globally repressed while stress-induced mRNA translation is promoted through GCN2. Sugar-dependent TOR signalling phosphorylates ERFVII, enabling interaction with MED25 and RNA polymerase II to activate hypoxia-responsive genes (HRGs). EIN3 also promotes ORE1-mediated senescence in old leaves, while miR164 suppresses ORE1 activity in young leaves. The lower left recovery section, shaded yellow, depicts re-oxygenation after flooding. Oxygen and hydrogen peroxide generated during a reactive oxygen species (ROS) burst stabilize ERFVII and activate oxidative stress-responsive genes (ORGs) while repressing HRGs. Ethylene signalling is attenuated through EBF-mediated ubiquitin–proteasome system (UPS) degradation and autophagic turnover of EIN3. Curved arrows around the outer circle indicate progression through flooding, hypoxia, and recovery, emphasizing that these signalling events are overlapping and interconnected rather than strictly linear.

It's a special week of firsts. I never really imagined doing this until last year, but we also started our first field trial with a local farmer and consortium, supported by @mwk-bw.bsky.social 🌽🌾 Super exciting! #plantscience

Through transcriptome and H3K27me3 profiling, we identified two VRN2-dependent processes exhibiting transcriptional memory: anthocyanin accumulation and delayed leaf senescence, both promoting flooding resilience.

Angiosperms evolved an oxygen-sensitive PRC2 subunit: VRN2. We show that vrn2 mutants no longer benefit from submergence priming, suggesting that flooding stress memory is controlled by VRN2. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
