A creditable man in many ways (and a million times better than most of his party’s subsequent presidential nominees) but one whose misfortune was to live in an era dominated by a far greater statesman.

Deep beneath London, a strange steel creature stirs. Its headlights glow as it cautiously emerges from the tunnel, sniffing out the platform ahead. For a moment, it surveys the territory, then vanishes back into the darkness. Taken at Sloane Square.

Had he asked AI the question properly he'd be on his way to salvation.
Are any of us ever truly innocent?

Probably not-if by "truly innocent" you mean completely free of causing harm, selfishness, ignorance, or complicity.

But there are different senses of innocence:

Moral innocence: never knowingly doing wrong.

Almost certainly unattainable over a lifetime.

Legal innocence: not guilty of a particular offense. Entirely real and important.

Innocence of intention: acting without intending harm. Very common, even when the consequences aren't harmless.

Childlike innocence: having not yet learned cruelty, cynicism, or moral complexity. Real, but temporary.

Existential innocence: being blameless simply because we are imperfect creatures shaped by circumstances we didn't choose. This is perhaps the most interesting sense. The fact that none of us is perfectly innocent doesn't mean everyone is equally guilty. That's an important distinction. A person can be deeply flawed and still be decent; another can exploit that fact as an excuse for terrible behavior.

In fact, I'd argue that recognizing one's own lack of innocence is part of becoming morally serious. The truly dangerous person may be the one who is absolutely certain of his own innocence.
