Also, these cases were abundant in the same area. Possibly containing the larvae?

Marble Screw-moss (Syntrichia papillosa) growing abundantly on old blackthorn (?) branches. Found in the same location as the last post. 🌱 Close up inspection of the leaves clearly shows the gemmae (which are apparently baby mosses!) on the leaves. @bbsbryology.bsky.social #mosses #bryophytes

More ferns! Pinnate-leaved plants from the first two images are Black Spleenwort (Asplenium adiantum-nigrum) and the last image shows a little Hart's-tongue fern (Asplenium scolopendrium), all of which are happy with this mild rainy weather we're getting 🌧️☔ #essex #ferns #botany #plants #maldon

Additionally in the bog: Bog Pondweed, Potamogeton polygonifolius (first two images) and within the water the very common desmid Euastrum binale gutwinskii, identified with the 4th photo 📚. I've found it in virtually every acidic body of water I've ever looked at under the microscope. 🔬

And lastly I've a mix of species; the darker green moss in the left I suspect is the Dusky Beard Moss Didymodon luridus. As for the lighter moss I am not so sure. Also there is a pretty cool lichen on the top and bottom, some sort of cyanobacterium-containing species. Blennothallia? 🌿🌱🍄

Some of my recent photos of some rock-dwelling bryophytes from the grounds of Chelmsford Cathedral: Here is the common Anomalous Bristle-moss, Orthotrichum anomalum, fruiting happily on an old grave, enjoying the calcareous rock it is composed of (assuming limestone?). 🌿🌱

🍄‍🟫 Another parasitic fungus that frequents mossy walls (photos from back in December): I've identified this one as Arrhenia retiruga, with the common name Small Moss Oysterling according to #iNaturalist. Seems to like the common cushion moss #Grimmia as a host which it parasites upon.

Here's a plant I think is the Southern Marsh Orchid (Dactylorhiza praetermissa); this species I've also only seen once but this plant here seemed to like damp unimproved grassland besides a pond. 🪻🌧️

A species I've only seen once, and supposed to be not as common, is the Green-winged Orchid, Anacamptis morio. In similar habitats to the above species, the land this plant was found has since been lost to development. 🌱🪻

One of the most iconic British flowers has to be the Bee Orchid, Ophrys apifera. It's often quite small compared to other orchids so easily overlooked but is not infrequent in unimproved grassland, and can tolerate drier conditions too like the Pyramidal. 🐝

In a damper environment in this woodland ride I saw a colony of (what I believe to be!) the wonderful Common Spotted Orchid (Dactylorhiza fuchsii). Unfortunately not quite as common as the Pyramidal, it still pops up in unimproved grassland and heaths etc. 🌱🌿

Whilst looking forward to orchids coming up in warmer weather, I thought I'd post a few orchid species I have spotted in Essex... Here's the fairly common Pyramidal Orchid (Anacamptis pyramidalis) growing in the dry grassland of a sea wall, a habitat it seems to like in this part of the world. 🌱🪻
