Or else used in a cheap pen with a good cap seal, like the Platinum Preppy. Ellington Pens are decent, your friend/colleague gave you a nice gift. I use Octopus Write & Draw ink for a waterproof line. They clean out easily and come in lots of colours. De Atramentis Document inks are good too.

Acrylic based calligraphy inks are also not fountain pen safe. Only dye based inks marked as ‘for fountain pens’ is truly safe. Permanent and pigment based inks formulated for FPs can still dry up and clog a pen if it’s left for too long. They’re best washed out when you’re done,

So, the best thing to do is to flush every trace of India ink out of the pen before it has a chance to dry and set. Then soak the nib overnight and flush it again. If you can get hold of some fountain pen cleaner, flush that through the pen too. India ink contains shellac - it’ll set like varnish.

Just watched the most amazing behaviour from our cockerel. I threw a damaged courgette into the run (we have loads, thought they’d like it.) Normally cut them in half bur didn’t have a knife. The young hens didn’t recognise it as food but the cockerel did.

I’m surviving with a fan using the space blanket hack. Sure my neighbours think I’m insane because my windows are covered in silver Mylar now and my home is safe for vampires, but it’s made it 10 degrees cooler inside. (Mylar taped to outside of windows to avoid risk of glass cracking.)

True, we left handers can and do use all kinds of fountain pens. No specialist nib required. Just an ink that dries decently fast, and blotting paper. And that’s if you’re a side-writer or over-writer. If you naturally write with your hand below the line, you don’t even have to worry about that.

Kris @hareguizer.bsky.social · 16/06/2026
I just flush them out with clean water to remove traces of old ink, then leave them to dry. It’s easiest to do it before the old ink dries up inside the pen.

You’re allowed to not like cheese. It’s a pretty repulsive and bizarre thing to eat if you think about it objectively. Aged lumps of half-rotted ruminant secretions? How did that ever become popular? (I do like cheese, but I acknowledge it’s a wtf food)

Today, we celebrate the most famous anti-fascist action in history: D-Day. When you see today’s politicians and influencers decry anti-fascism protests, just remember those brave souls who stormed the beaches on June 6th, and ask yourself: which is the right side of history to be on?

Cetacea
Digital Drawing. An early whale (Pakicetus) stands at the water's edge, bending down for a drink. Behind it is a wall of tall grasses/reeds. The entire scene is shown within the shape of a blue whale. Despite the vast gulf in form and time between the two animals, they are of the same group: Cetacea.

Hah, it is that good, I love Pilot's nibs. But the Wing Sung 699 and Asvine V126 come pretty close in size, weight and operation, and are a lot more affordable. Much as I love 'em, it took me a year to learn to write tidily with high-end Sailor and Pilot nibs. They're different.

How about using Oxford Campus paper with Scribzee? Best of both worlds? The paper's very ink-friendly anyway (shows sheen, shading and shimmer with no feathering or bleedthrough).

I've found the Opus 88 eyedropper pens reliable longhaul writers. They take standard nib sizes too so you can easily find replacements if one develops a problem. Like the 823, they have a shutoff valve to prevent leaks during travel.

Octopus Write & Draw range are waterproof (no washout so you can use them with watercolours) and formulated for fountain pens, but don't let them dry up in your pen. Use a pen that seals well and clean it out thoroughly. I use something cheap like a Preppy, just in case.

Alexandra Winteraven writes about the sacred feminine, the Earth, and the wildness of women, wherein beauty and terror inhabit one body. "a living earth includes rot, parasites, mothers eating their young. it includes storms that do not care about your nervous system." substack.com/@alexandrawi...
even inside matriarchy discourse, earth keeps getting turned into the Good Mother.

sigh

she provides, nourishes, heals, protects. she offers beauty, awe, medicine, food, air, water, life.

yes. and.earth is not a tradwife with moss in her hair.

a living earth includes rot, parasites, mothers eating their young. it includes storms that do not care about your nervous system. it includes fungi digesting what died, tectonic plates grinding the world into a new shape, rivers taking whole houses because water follows force, not human sentiment.

it includes beauty and terror as one body.when earth only gets named as mother, healer, nurturer, provider, we are still inside the same gendered assignment. feminine equals care. feminine equals nourishment. feminine equals endless giving.

that is still essentialism.

and it does to earth what it does to women: reduces an alive, unruly, dangerous, intelligent force into something useful, comforting, and morally clean.

earth is sacred.

earth is relational.

earth is also feral as fuck.

"Roman roads really ran right resiliently"

River Thames
River Great Ouse
River Wye
River Thame
River Colne
River Ouzel'

Congratulations! I find Esties have pretty durable nibs so don't be too afraid to use it. Write with it daily if you can. If sat unused, the ink can dry up in the nib - if that happens, a quick dip in water and a gentle wipe with a bit of tissue will usually get it flowing again.

I want to read studies on the psychology of fountain pen inks. Like, how frustrating is it that Diamine Potpourri is unscented? Or that KWZ Grapefruit smells of vanilla? Would I still love Kitty Inkpot's Sparkling Grapefruit Wine if it was named Toxic Positivity instead? Or if I hated grapefruit?

There is a trick to it. I watched a Youtube video guide on how to put TWSBI pistons back together right. If the leak from the feed turns out to be from a crack (sadly common on injection moulded clear plastic) then contact TWSBI - they'll send replacement parts for just the cost of postage.

I’m left handed too and some nibs do starve for ink when pushed instead of pulled, but most are fine for a leftie. I think the nib in the Pilot Custom 92 and maybe 74 are the only modern nibs I’ve encountered with the problem. Until recently, Jinhao nibs often had pinched tines. It might be that.
010
Kris @hareguizer.bsky.social · 23/03/2026
Sounds like the nib may need a slight adjustment because you shouldn't need to press at all with a fountain pen. That's what makes them nice to use. They should just glide.
