Fop [fop] (n.) 1. A man concerned overmuch with his clothes and appearance in an affected way; a dandy. 2. A conceited fool. (v.) 1. To make a fool of; to deceive or dupe. 2. To act foolishly. From Late Middle English “foppe” or “fobbe” (fop, fool) from German “foppen” (to jeer)
A "Grandiloquent Word of the Day" meme featuring the word “Fop,” defined as a man excessively concerned with his clothing and appearance; a dandy. At right is a black-and-white engraved portrait of a rather pompous-looking gentleman with elaborately curled hair, a high cravat, and an ornate coat. Below the definition, a humorous example sentence describes a man whose pretentious mannerisms and affected attire make him “considerably more flop than fop.
