There have always been humans who thought: 1) The world will end soon 2) It will happen in a cool, exciting way 3) It’ll happen to me personally 4) I’ll be a martyred prophet, or a warlord, or otherwise special 5) People who don’t see this are lesser “Sexy apocalypse” is a great phrase for that

As much as this fool deserves to be pilloried for his absolutely absurd statement, and it says something about Reform’s idiocy, why is this the top story on the Guardian site? They aren’t in a position to create policy, and probably never will be, so why are we treating anything they say seriously?
A screenshot of the Guardian newspaper’s app’s main page, with the main headline (under ‘News’) ‘Reform’s Tice says people should stop fighting climate crisis and ‘enjoy’ heat’.

so the government can send us an emergency alert about the national risk of wildfires, but can’t actually address why it is that we’ve become a country at risk of wildfires, something formerly associated with arid climates?

This is brilliant. I read it, expecting American exceptionalism to claim all sorts of global phenomena, but they nailed it. The only thing missing is the most American thing of all: a gun. (Gift article)

The ENGFRA game healed something. Two teams Playing phenomenally. Records broken. Golden boot challenge laid. And our boys were incredible. Saka, Rice, Spence, Henderson, all of them. Proud of 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, and glad France gave us such a great game.

I love the World Cup because it lets you see the unique cultures of nations expressed through football, like Germany's ruthless efficiency, Brazil's beautiful dance, Spain's style and flair, France's total collapse in the face of slight adversity, and Italy's rich ancient history.

The social media age carries additional emotional risk during major sporting events: watching all the highlights, memes, and commentary during England’s great run means that all my timelines nothing but painful reminders of their big loss. Some effort will have to go into re-curating my feeds.

Big day today. Turned down for my first academic job (a rite of passage!) But, locally famous for being anti-fascist.
Photo in the Oxford Mail of a middle-aged, middle-class woman screaming at people who weren't even there, and who live off others' anger, therefore perpetuating the whole process of ideological division which is tearing apart the fabric of society. Part of a journalist's story on the crowds of people protesting against the platforming of 'Tommy Robinson' by the Oxford Union, costing the city and local businesses thousands of ££, for absolutely no benefit to anyone except Tommy and his racist hooligans. Photo of the photo courtesy of my college librarian.

Happy to report that the anti-fascism protestors outnumber the Robinson supporters about 100-1. And lots of entertainment watching the toffs trying to get in to the Oxford Union.

I’m middle class, left wing, and my lived experience has taught me that I’ve been afforded more human rights on account of features I was born with and can’t control (skin colour, location of birth, cisgender, etc) than other people, and that makes me fucking furious because that’s unjust

From @oxfordclarion.bsky.social. So it turns out inflaming culture wars doesn't make financial sense?
Quote from the Oxford Clarion newsletter, 26 May 2026:
"Student polemics and dressing-up society, the Oxford Union, has “postponed” its debate on Islam that was to feature far-right leader Stephen ‘Tommy Robinson’ Yaxley-Lennon. A statement reads: “The Fifth Week debate has been postponed to allow time for planning of the event. We are grateful to our local partners and stakeholders for their continued support and engagement.” The Clarion has not been able to substantiate this “continued support”, but the Bishop of Oxford and Imam Monawar Hussain did call the invitation “untimely and divisive”. Jacob Rees-Mogg, a trustee of the Union’s parent charity, suggested in national media that the Union was faced with a policing bill of £80,000: it is already struggling with a deficit of over £350,000."

Interesting analysis for those of us interested in hope and aware of the big graph that shows Reform peaked in October last year and is sliding inexorably down.
Peter Kellner, the elections expert and former YouGov president, has posted a good analysis of the results so far on his Substack blog. It is well worth reading in full, but here’s an extract.

Behind the impressive tally of Reform’s gains – likely to end up well over 1,000 – Nigel Farage should be privately worried. In last year’s local elections Reform won 41 per cent of all seats contested across England. On the basis of the overnight figures, this year’s tally is around 33 per cent. If there were no polls, and there had been no elections last year, this year’s figure would be astonishing. But we do have the record of recent polls and elections, and it seems clear that Reform has peaked …

In contrast to Reform, Labour has cause for relief, despite losing half the seats it was defending yesterday. It’s bad – and in normal times it would be catastrophic – but it’s not as bad as its record in local council by-elections over the past 12 months, where it hast lost three-quarters of the seats it was defending …

However, even on the most optimistic interpretation of Labour’s performance, the overnight figures contain a stark warning. John Curtice told BBC viewers in the early hours that while Labour has lost many SEATS to Reform, it has lost VOTES more to the Greens.

Among the many problems I have with the new building, the inaccessibility for attending other faculty’s research seminars is a big one. If the point of the building was to make interdisciplinary collaboration easier, it’s failing.

Co-sign 100%. Our faculties have been downgraded in size, access, and amenities. Rather than celebrating the importance of the Humanities, we have been lumped together in the periphery, hidden behind other faculties, in a building which prioritises rare public events over its students.
