Trump says everyone is equal under the law. Interesting timing when a top 2028 rival suddenly finds himself under pressure. Many analysts view Newsom as a top Democratic candidate for 2028 and favored against Vance, Rubio, or almost any GOP nominee. This looks political, not legal. Thoughts?

Governor Newsom says federal investigators are digging through his circle, including friends, former staff, and people connected to his family.

No charges have been filed against Governor Newsom, and the DOJ still hasn’t explained what exactly it’s looking for.

President Trump says everyone is equal under the law.

Newsom says this isn’t about a crime. He says it’s about 2028 and the possibility of a presidential run.

A lot of people see Newsom as one of the Democrats’ strongest potential candidates for 2028 and someone with a real shot at winning the presidency.

The Trump admin actually ended an early warning system (PREDICT) that was set up by Obama with the explicit purpose of detecting viruses that could become pandemics. It may well have stopped Covid and led to containment and elimination if Trump had not removed funding in his first term.

Two months before the novel coronavirus is thought to have begun its deadly advance in Wuhan, China, the Trump administration ended a $200-million pandemic early-warning program aimed at training scientists in China and other countries to detect and respond to such a threat.

The project, launched by the U.S. Agency for International Development in 2009, identified 1,200 different viruses that had the potential to erupt into pandemics, including more than 160 novel coronaviruses. The initiative, called PREDICT, also trained and supported staff in 60 foreign laboratories — including the Wuhan lab that identified SARS-CoV-2, the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

Field work ceased when the funding ran out in September, and organizations that worked on the PREDICT program laid off dozens of scientists and analysts, said Peter Daszak, president of EcoHealth Alliance, a key player in the program.
