Most programmers don’t seem to really think about the ethics of LLMs because we have always been generally okay with people learning from our work and leveraging it to be more productive.

LLM training is literally entirely based on the claim that any content they are able to access in any way is fair game for them to use and republish for commercial purposes in perpetuity.

But I also think there’s a strong argument to be made that training LLMs on simple writing found on the Internet or in books, and even open source software source code is also unethical and should be illegal.

LLMs can be useful in specific domains and use cases by enterprises and professionals. My industry is one of those use cases. However, even in these specific use cases, the ethics of using them is extremely fraught. We all know about these considerations for art, of course.

I have to use LLMs for my job. I do not believe that there is a legitimate use case for LLMs aimed at consumers or students that doesn’t boil down to fraud, cheating, or theft. The reason people hate LLMs is because corporations are forcing them into everything, in use cases that suck at.
