In my quest to loosen my art style and overall process, I went to get some wax pastels, and I love them! They’re so fun to use and are just messy enough for me to have fun without being frustrated by a lack of control. I will definitely go back to them regularly! #Art #Sketchbook #TraditionalArt

The vibe of this book is very much, “These people are ridiculous, but the stakes are real and matter,” which also feels veRY PERTINENT TO THE TODAY-TIMES SOMEHOW.

Austen makes it so clear the stakes are different for Charlotte and Elizabeth. It’s an instance where youth is an ephemeral currency (it’s not even quite a privilege in the sociological sense here, but it lives around there) foisted onto women. Elizabeth doesn’t need Mr Collins. Charlotte does.

I must also retract my belief that Mrs Bennet should have a gun, a regrettable misreading of her character. I do, however, think it would be very funny if we gave Lydia a gun.

I am still in this interminable party where every character is the most distilled version of themselves for some reason, and all I can think to get through it is, “I know Darcy doesn’t wear glasses, but someone should give him the slutty little glasses. He feels slutty little glasses-coded.”

Wait okay so Caroline Bingley comes up to Elizabeth and goes, “Your little sister is kind of obsessed with Wickham, so, uh, by the way, you gotta know you can’t believe Wickham,” and it’s delightful because we don’t want to believe her! She’s awful! But can’t awful people say true things?

Elizabeth: *polite mid-dance small talk* Darcy: … Elizabeth: Okay now it’s your turn to come up with a pleasantry. Darcy: Yes. Elizabeth: You could say any number of things—about the room, about the crowd… Darcy: I’ll say whatever you want. Elizabeth (and the reader): 😳😳😳

I like that Charlotte Brontë was basically telling a soapy saga about how the world is a hard and complicated place and sometimes Shit Happens, and Jane Austen is just like, “I’ve met the worst and simultaneously most boring people you can imagine. Hunker down, let me tell you all about them.”

This mixed media painting was done beside a pond in the grounds of the Old Rectory, Yelling, Cambridgeshire (formerly Huntingdonshire). I worked on it on the spot and developed it a little further in the studio. Still have it. There's a moorhen swimming along if you look carefully.
