Spare me Sen. Thom Tillis’s self-interested redemption book tour. When he had the opportunity to do what was right, he failed nearly every time. For example, he drew a line on Jan. 6 apologia, and then confirmed multiple people who crossed it, including Kash Patel and Jeanine Pirro.

Republican Sen. Tillis calls his vote for Hegseth the 'biggest regret of my career' in a new book
Republican Sen. Thom Tillis says in a new book that his deciding vote to confirm Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in January 2025 is the “biggest regret of my career.”

I love the 800lb gorilla line. My one retrospective gripe is the Caps didn’t draft Justin Cover so I could make Tuch 🎶and Cover🎶 puns.

Lafayette Square isn't "a historic protest site." It's a fucking park. And it's packed on nice days. Calling it a protest site is White House framing. They're closing a popular public park to create a presidential palace Saddam Hussein would love.

one of the ways the media shows which side they prefer, is which politicians they quote uncharitably out-of-context and which they clean up for even when what they actually say and do is offensive (the Biden story ran on the front page less than a week before the 24 election)

Maybe I’m over indexing on my own experience but it changed my view of the show from “this is some of the best television ever” to “holy fuck did they ever not stick the landing how did they screw this up this badly”. Also I have Thoughts about that, but it’s out of scope for this topic.

There’s an easy fix, which is move the start of the season back. You might not like that fix, but it’s straightforward.

Also the last season was so bad it got the show runners fired from their *other* show, IIRC.

That’s fair, but it felt like GoT was poised to enter the canon the same way The Wire and The Sopranos did. While Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is quite charming and well written, and House of the Dragon is good, neither of them is even close to the peak of what GoT was circa The Red Wedding.

I think it has to be Game of Thrones, which was so bad at the end that it erased a previously world bestriding cultural reference.

Saying he'd be cool with Iran nuking my home city is pretty bad but not quite as bad as when Hillary said some trump supporters were deplorable so I can see why the media turned the latter into a major scandal and not the former

It was time last year, really. He very clearly doesn’t have it anymore and I’m a little mad (I’m a lot mad) that not only are they paying him a big chunk to not have it this year, they’re going to pay a big chunk next year for bonus overages.

I don't regard antisemitism as a unique or fundamental bigotry, anymore than I think that TERFism or Islamophobia is. But like TERFism, Islamophobia and other bigotries, it is a habit of thought that makes people increasingly conspiratorial, nervy and aggressive. There's no bottom to be had

Getting mad about having the tables turned on your club is simply not a serious position. The “they agreed to follow the rules (that advantage my club)” arguments are similarly tedious because they’re not responsive to that fundamental question of is it fair to outspend your opponents.
000
Michael Stanford @halfagain.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
But they’re not. Their answer the fundamental question of “is it fair to spend more than your competition’s budget” is “yes, obviously”. So what they’re mad about is City doing to them what they thought they should do to City in a sporting competition.

Michael Stanford @halfagain.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Like you have to throw the book at City for obstruction and just the flagrance of their disregard for the PL’s authority. But “financial doping” is the fastest way to get me to laugh in your face. If Arsene Wenger was for a hard salary cap in the PL, it would be one thing.

Yup, absolutely. I think it’s wrong to treat the Iran War as simply one bad error that happened to the Trump Admin rather than the entirely logical consequence of the way it operates. If it wasn’t Iran, it would almost certainly have been something else

The GOP cut funding to the IRS because *audits work* and they fundamentally don't believe rich people should have to play by the rules.
Line chart titled "Revenue per audit," subtitled "In-person audits, 2010-2014." It plots average revenue and average cost per audit by taxpayer income percentile, poorer to richer, from the 0–5th percentile to the top 0.1%. Source: Boning et al. 2023, "A Welfare Analysis of Tax Audits Across the Income Distribution."

Across the bottom half of the income distribution, revenue and cost track closely, both around $3,000–$6,000 per audit. Above the median, revenue pulls ahead of cost: about $10,000 vs. $5,000 near the 90th percentile, and about $17,000 vs. $8,000 at the 95th–99th. At the top, revenue jumps to about $31,000 for the 99–99.9th percentile and about $90,000 for the top 0.1%.

This is my main take on the model sandbox escape discourse. I think there's a lot to be criticized about obvious under-investment in containment procedures and attention. But also, "velociraptors can work in packs and open doors" is still a novel problem the world did not have a few years ago.
