This is a time-honored internet tradition! The first time I ever heard about someone doing this was in the 2000s, when Mitch Wagner – then the editor of Information Week – discovered some teenaged girls using the comment section of one of his old blog-posts to evade the school firewall's blockade of chat tools. When ChatGPT's chatbots deployed this tactic, they weren't "setting their own goals" or displaying worrying initiative. They were rolling out a tactic that has been understood by American middle-schoolers for about two decades.

In 2004, Bush won by invoking the gay marriage boogeman. Then Obama won (twice) while refusing to openly support gay marriage. And then gay marriage happened anyway! That series of events left an indelible impression on Democratic strategists. The lesson is seared into their minds in perpetuity.

My beef is that people are doing performative outrage and attention seeking behavior at a time where fascism is a very serious threat. Do these people act like they are afraid of fascism? Many strike me as bored with their lives hoping fascism gives them meaning.

I wish you all could see how dumb the whole progressives vs centrists beef is. I'm not saying oh we must come together and be united or whatever, I'm just telling you the back-and-forth sounds more insular, tribalist and reactionary than thoughtful or constructive.

Look if it were official GOP policy to round Jews into camps and some Dem candidates were like "what if we just make them wear yellow armbands?" I'm gonna be honest I would have a lot of trouble voting for any of those Democrats. Not making an argument about strategy here, just stating how it is.

This is so stupid. Will said "online trans discourse," and the person he quoted clearly understood that he was talking about online trans discourse. Their criticism doesn't hinge on whether he generalized about all trans people or just those online. It's neither here nor there.

What I think is that it's disingenuous to quibble over semantic technicalities. Will did not in fact write "online discourse" (that is, including non-trans online discourse). And the person being quoted obviously wasn't trying to claim that Will was referring to trans people offline.
