Yes, facts and evidence are important. Science too. Yes, misinformation is a problem. But notably, biases in people's knowledge and opinions are not evolving out of the blue.

Butterflies are beautiful - and some more than others. The consequence is a bias in conservation efforts, but not necessarily in species' status. This bias is worth attention. Read more here: www.ufz.de/index.php?en...

When a poor CAP reform is on the table which defends the worst parts while cutting on what works, not much is left to save. Interestingly, I hear the wish to cancel the CAP mostly from AfD members, whereas most stakeholders we meet do prefer a CAP that works - for people, nature and healthy food.

When people say ''I have lots of butterflies in my garden'', it's useful to get a quantitative estimate, in a standardized way. Example: At friends' garden (Alps near Granoble) I counted >50 individuals, 8 spp in a 15 minute count. Try the ButterflyCount app, you can now register sites too!

It's always a joy to meet good friends, both humans and non-humans, in nature. Here's one of my favourite, the Chalkhill Blue (Lysandra coridon, Silbergrüne Bläuling). Rare in many parts of Germany, but abundant in the Alps.

An investigation by @propublica.org and @drilledmedia.bsky.social has found that the same modelers who overestimated the potential of CCS repeatedly underestimated solar power - one of the energy technologies that would allow more oil to remain in the ground. projects.propublica.org/why-carbon-c...
Two line charts are depicted. At the top, the line chart is labeled "Carbon Capture Capacity." The y-axis is "megatons" and the x-axis is years (2010-2040). More than a dozen blue lines show a steady increase from the left edge of the chart to the right edge of the chart. Some of the blue lines exceed 4,000 megatons between years 2030 and 2040. The blue lines are labeled "Projections". A maroon line is at around 0 megatons from 2010 to 2025. The maroon line is labeled "Actual carbon storage".

The second chart is labeled "Solar Power". The y-axis is "terawatt-hour" and the x-axis is years (2010-2040). Dozens of blue lines increase from around 0 on the left side of the chart, showing moderate growth from 2010 to 2040. The blue lines are labeled "Projections". A maroon line starts at 0 in 2010 and rises sharply to over 2,000 in 2024. The maroon line is obviously increasing much faster than the blue lines. The maroon line is labeled "Actual solar electricity production."

My talk at @scbeurope.bsky.social Only 10-15% of the EU's cattle herd is needed to graze every biodiversity-rich field there is. Most cattle never set hoof on pasture. They're fed grain, packed onto fertilized monocultures. The solution isn't more grazing. It's fewer animals, better raised.

My talk at @scbeurope.bsky.social - 2 Put every EU cow on pasture and you'd need more land, more emissions, more imported crops from elsewhere. Too many animals for the land we have. The fix isn't more grazing — it's less and better. #Agroecology #LivestockStrategy

When politicians and policies fail, i.e. when upscaling of solutions is impossible, outscaling is an excellent alternative - namely replicating what works, instead of awaiting someone else to help. Same might be needed for #agroecology and, more broadly, sustainable agrifood systems.

Brussels late night under major heat: the city stinks and people are melting. Under these conditions, the big signs all over the Parliament and around it could be read: ''Democracy inaction''. We all pay the price of COPI, the Cost Of Policy Inaction
A big sign above Brussels Luxemburg station says "Democracy in Action''. With focus on empty promises or decieving indicators, such as the proposal to assign the ''Rio Marker'' for 43% of the CAP budget - which will enable MS to list instruments to the climate objective without taking any action - the Parliament risks spending a lot of talking, debating, writing and reporting while de facto doing nothing.
Just to name one example.
