New paper out in ISME journal! 🪲🌲 With our Czech colleagues, we show how host, bacteria and fungi cooperate to drive nutrient acquisition and metabolism in the European spruce bark beetle holobiont. #Symbiosis #MicrobialEcology @isme-microbes.bsky.social doi.org/10.1093/isme...

Meet the Metabolic HGT Hubs! How do bacteria adapt so quickly to degrade pollutants that didn't even exist a century ago? We hope this inspires new ways of thinking about microbial evolution and stimulates the development of NG bioremediation strategies doi.org/10.1111/1462...

🧬🌍New Perspective HGT fuels evolution in bioremediation. We introduce "Metabolic HGT Hubs": networks of key microbes, plasmids and ecological hotspots that drive metabolic adaptation. A new framework for evolutionary microbial ecology and future bioaugmentation strategies. doi.org/10.1111/1462...

Horizontal Gene Transfer and Genome Rearrangements Shape Bacterial Adaptation for Bioremediation
Exposure to xenobiotics triggers genome evolution and horizontal gene transfer (HGT), driving the acquisition of novel catabolic functions. These genomic adaptations provide a competitive fitness adv...

Our paper in @globalchangebio.bsky.social 🎉 We analyzed 1,921 soils from 33 countries to show how climate and agriculture shape soil microbiomes. Pesticides & fertilizers reshape microbial communities and ecological networks despite higher diversity in agricultural soils. 🔗 doi.org/10.1111/gcb....

Soil Microbial Diversity and Network Organization Respond to Land Use and Agricultural Inputs Worldwide
Based on a global analysis of 1921 soil samples, we show that agricultural management acts as a powerful ecological filter reshaping microbial communities. Land use and inputs—pesticides and fertiliz...

New preprint! Soils are alive — yet we still know little about how farming reshapes them. Here we analyzed 1,921 soil microbiomes from 33 countries to uncover how agriculture—especially pesticides and fertilizers—is transforming microbial life globally. www.researchsquare.com/article/rs-8...

What happens to microbial genomic evolution in highly stable, closed ecosystems? In this preprint, authors look at 111 MAGs from a Romanian cave isolated from external influences for 5.5My(!) and see more pseudogenisation of core genes & limited HGT. Unsurprising? 🔗 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
