I am very happy, for example, at the success of OVER/UNDER a year ago. It is also enriched by prior histories of text-based RP and larp, rather than separate from them.

We are saturated in disinfo rn and would like to warn others about what we're fighting against (and what's being spread anyway). The distinction between "Americans" and "their current regime" has become quite sharp.

Yes! Niesz and Holland address this point precisely. He anticipated the Internet, because it was necessary to brake the one-way radio communications chain that enabled propaganda of all kinds.

10 years means I myself and the folks whose indie TTRPGs I wrote about are now in our 40s and 50s, so the flash & novelty have faded understandably. I look forward to every hotshot young thinker transforming into a wild-eyed old curmudgeon. I rely on it, in fact!

Oh look! A Brecht reference. There have been quite a few of us who have invoked Brecht to discuss the sorta basic alienation effects that games create with their strange rituals. Brecht has been invoked on games and interactivity since at least the 1980s (See: Niesz & Holland 1984).

When you cross the late 1970s--- an era of excellent parties & subcultures before AIDS took it away from us---with the late 1990s---an early Internet era of surreal tech & goofy cultural mash-ups before 9/11 took it away from us---you get a joke that's greater than the sum of its parts.

The Cornell report on the Future of the American University is a disaster, mainstreaming and endorsing profoundly reactionary right-wing diagnoses of higher education that have no business in a serious report on what higher ed is or should become.
Compare, for example, the Progressive Policy Institute’s report on The Distortion of American Studies
with a similar study of American political science from the Goldwater Institute: Richard D. Kahlenberg

As an Iowan, I understand farms to be both (a) businesses run by a rural upper-middle class and (b) how literal food gets to everyone's table at scale, especially during times of transit and trade uncertainty. Fragile systems placed in the hands of narcissistic megalomaniac politicians.

To this day, I *highly resent* that the tools we all contributed to have now transformed into instruments of algorithmic-political suppression: HTML, UNIX/Linux, TCP/IP, Java, "cookies," JPEG, GUI. These were *supposed* to help bring us all together, not become a cord tightened around our neck!

This meant that, to me, cyberpunk and the literal "hacker" ideals of The Matrix, etc. were more-or-less dead after 9/11. The Internet had been targeted for colonization, with PayPal & other financial transaction services on the horizon, Google and YouTube on their way, and the old nerds were fired.

1999-2000, with the DotCom crash, was a wake-up call on multiple fronts. When I was in IT, that was when all the corpo-trained drones were exported via layoffs from failed companies into our university & K-12 tech infrastructure. They replaced the cyber-inventor freaks I had come to love.

I am literally a product of the early text-based Internet. Who I am is inseparable from it, the dial-up screeching of it all. As a 11 year-old, I could instantly access knowledge communities composed of people *intelligent enough to get on the Internet back then*, a reasonable bar.
