Without healthy, society-forward careers in sight, our humanities majors -- who *do* know how culture, media, and narrative work -- instead turn to the dark side after graduation, feeding the gloom machine to "get theirs" and get paid.
Does the existential threat from Al raised by Jacob Coxon when he resigned from Anthropic reflect a real concern that you observe on a daily basis among young researchers?
Not among researchers, but the young people who work at these companies operate in a world [Silicon Valley, Berkeley, etc.] where these kinds of discussions are commonplace. Many of them aren't really engineers; they come from the humanities, philosophy, or other disciplines. They're 25 years old, they're naive, they don't do engineering work, they've never worked at large companies where real products are developed for real people, with discipline. And they get together, a bit like in Parisian cafés in the 1920s, to talk about these grand science-fiction ideas. When these young people resign, they know they're going to attract attention. It allows them to feel virtuous and to be seen as very important figures. They claim to be giving up money, but in reality, they already have their stock options [options allowing employees to subscribe for and purchase company shares, editor's note]. So all of this is a grand moralizing performance that doesn't serve the real objective it claims to pursue. There's a great deal of naiveté here, which goes hand in hand with a certain cynicism...

We are opening the "DARE TO STARE" photo exhibit in DAAP this week. Photos of people with disabilities and other othered populations from the 19th Century, now recontextualized by Dr. Theresa Leininger-Muller.
FREAKS IN SIDESHOWS
"A disabled body is a hypervisible body, one that cannot escape being laden with an excess of meaning."
People have gaped at those different from themselves for millennia. Sideshows became more formalized
in 16th-century England and later were part of circuses and dime museums. The heyday of the freak show occurred in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a time of monumental scientific discoveries but also pseudoscience, such as eugenics.
Sideshows, located in their own tents and requiring an extra fee for admission, were among the most popular and profitable circus attractions. Freaks were defined by bodily features spectacular enough to make audiences want to stare. Costumes, props, extensive advertising, and the showcasing of unique abilities and talents turned people with disabilities into freaks.
Some performers had physical differences and abnormalities from birth, some confronted society's perceptions of race, ethnicity, and gender, and others challenged norms with body modifications, such as tattoos or extremely long hair or beards. Those with congenital disabilities were the aristocrats of the sideshow world.
The more unusual their bodies, the better chance they had to control their salaries and working conditions.
Show promoters, such as P.T. Barnum, hyperbolized or outright falsified biographical details of some
performers, labelling them as exotic or primitive wonders of nature, rare specimens, or beasts. Consumers, particularly those in rural areas or those who travelled little, reacted with fascination, curiosity, fear, and awe.
Some entertainers themselves manufactured distorted public images-pure humbug--for advertising and to sell fictional autobiographies in souvenirs called pitch books.
Showmen profited by exhibiting humans. A few took good care of their performers, some of whom outearned them. Others treated employees as property, controlling their earnings and personal lives, cruelly exploiting and demeaning them. In certa…DARE TO STARE:
19th-Century Circus and Sideshow Portraits
A FotoFocus Venue
Sept. 28-Nov. 10, 2026
Step right up! Dare to Stare examines celebrity culture in 19th-century circus and sideshow
portraits and how these once-ubiquitous cartes-de-visite, tintypes, and cabinet cards entertained, educated, and served as memory aids.
Enormous crowds engaged in bold looking at circuses and sideshows.
Thrilled by colorful
spectacles, death-defying acts, exotic cultures, wild animals, rousing music, and amusing clowns, audiences savored both watching dynamic performances in person and sustained gazing at performers privately afterwards by buying their photographic portraits, sometimes autographed in person.
Featured are bearded ladies, living skeletons, fat people, tattooed bodies, clowns, conjoined
twins, armless/legless people, a three-legged boy, a four-legged woman, snake charmers, elastic skinned men, albinos, knife throwers, acrobats, aerialists, excessively hairy folk, bicyclists, contortionists, fire eaters, jugglers, little people, giants, sword swallowers, levitating performers, strong men, trapeze artists, a double-voiced singer, a human pin cushion, and an impresario. Trained animals include elephants, big cats, horses, bears, dogs, birds, goats, and pigs, as well as snakes.
Such performers wanted people to look at them. They made a living by appearing publicly on stage and by selling their likenesses. For some, such imagery led to both fame, fortune, and a measure of immortality as generations continue to pore over details of their portraits.
We marvel at the
obstacles they overcame, the skills they perfected, the exhausting travel they undertook, and the relationships they forged with each other and society at large.

The Greatest Showman is a 2017 American musical period drama film, a heavily fictionalized depiction of the life of P.T. Barnum, a showman and entertainer who created the Barnum Bailey & Circus, and its premiere attractions, such as bearded ladies, little people, trapeze artists, and Jenny Lind. The film stars Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya.

How about...
LORD OF THE
DICE
(1.0) INTRODUCl'ION 1 Hoard of the most brilliant ideas ever to (6.2) Developer'. Note.
LORD OF THE DICE is a simple, easy to
play fantasy role-playing game. It is speci-
fically geared to those people who wish to
join this fascinating hobby without having
to tearn extremely complicated rules, and
is also challenging enough to interest the
veteran role-player. The Player assumes
the role of an adventurer in a fantasy
world, and allows his persona to merge
with that of the character. Creativity is
necessary to this game; the more fertile the
Player's imagination, the better the game.
(2.0) GENERAL COUllSE OF PLAY
One Player is designated the Gamesmas-
ter; it is in his "world" the other Players
will adventure with their characters. The
Gamesmaster co-ordinates the Players'
characters within his concept of a fantasy
world. He is responsible for adjudicating
all actions of the Players' characters in as
logical and coherent a manner as possible.
While the Player is responsible for breath-
ing life into his character, it is the Games-
master who gives the Player the milieu in
which his character will react. It is recom-
mended that the Gamesmaster alloW no
more than six Players to run characters at
anyone time; otherwise the number of
Players will become too unwieldy for the
best of Gamesmasters.
hit the fantasy role-playing hobby (pre-
sumably within all competent Players)
(4.0) CHARACl'ER GENERATION
The Player rolls dice until he obtains a
series of die-rolls he feels are esthetically
appealing to him. The Gamesmaster then
assigns names to the appropriate charac-
teristics, detailing their effects upon his
world. The GM need only assign any rea-
sonable sounding name to the characteris-
tic; it is only necessary to fool any semi-
knowledgeable passerby. The character
then thinks up a name for his character,
and he is ready to begin play.

I enjoy @mckenziewark.bsky.social on Civilization from her 2006 Gamer Theory book
AMERICA
(on Civilization III)
OF WHAT USE IS THE PAST to a gamer?
Peter Lunenfeld: “For the most part,
its blood, mischief and role playing that gamers revel in.
They live in an alternative universe, a solipsistic one
scripted by designers whose frame of reference extends no
further back than Pong, Pac-Man, and Dungeons & Dragons.
The visual and storyline tropes that most of us bring with
us as cultural baggage are . . . all but forgotten ancestral
memories, thrown off, on purpose, too cumbersome to be
of any use.”* In this new world that appears indifferent to
history—with only halls of fame for its champions, chroni-
cles of its big battles, and charts of its greatest hits—ac-
counting for how this digital gamespace came into being
presents something of a challenge.

THIS
Long before the first grant was frozen, graduate students were noticing a quieter set of contradictions. They were told that teaching matters while watching excellent teachers struggle for recognition. They were encouraged to engage with the public while learning that public scholarship rarely counts toward career advancement. They were told that mentorship is central to academic culture while watching faculty who pour themselves into students get passed over for colleagues with longer publication lists. They entered science hoping to improve society and discovered that the system rewards productivity more reliably than it rewards care.

When they call themselves "the God squad," there is a level of hubris expressed that takes on, well, Biblical proportions. May we become humble stewards of our flora and fauna again in our lifetime. Until then, the role of "God" will be played by a US lower-circuit judge.
In March, the president convened the so-called "God squad", named for its ability to decide a species' fate, to expand oil and gas industry operations in the Gulf of Mexico. At the start of his second term, Trump appointed high-ranking federal officials to the group to come up with ways to sidestep ESA rules that create "obstacles to domestic energy infrastructure"
Advocates are already preparing to challenge the new interpretation of harm.
"Let's be clear: there is no support for the Trump Administration's rule - no scientific support, no legal support, no public support," Boyles said. "We will see the Trump Administration in court."

Even in the Dying Earth novel, Vance has this great pillorying of human politics and religion, played mercilessly straight:
My hand holding the Tales of the Dying Earth anthology.•You must save yourselves," Rogol Domedonfors told them.
"You have ignored the ancient wisdom, you have been too indolent to learn, you have sought easy complacence from religion, rather than facing manfully to the world. I have resolved to impose a bitter experience upon you, which I hope will be salutary."
* *He called the rival priests of Pansiu and Cazdal, and handed to each a tablet of transparent metal.
* These tablets singly are useless; laid together a message may be read. He who reads the message will have the key to the ancient knowledge, and will wield the power I had planned for my own use.
Now go, and I will die."
" The priests, glaring at each other, departed, called their follow-
ers, and so began a great war.
" The body of RogolDomedonfors was never found, and some say his skeleton still lies in the passages below the city. The tablets are housed in the rival temples. By night there is murder, by day there is starvation in the streets. Many have fled to the mainland, and now I follow, leaving Ampridatvir, the last home of the race. I will build a wooden hut on the slope of Mount Liu and live out my days in the valley of Mel-Palusas? »

So, I think my personal philosophy is that I love games. And that most of the companies that make games do not love games. They love the money that the games provide them. But that doesn't mean that they're thoughtful about design, that they treat their staff with anything remotely like kindness, and so on.
