Every year, HMRC, by its own estimates, fails to collect 46.8 billion of tax. See webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ukgwa/202606... How about hiring more people to retrieve this avoided tax before suggesting funding defence by cutting welfare to the poorest and most vulnerable? Just saying.

I think it's absolutely mad that today there's a *national news story* about 400 oil platform workers losing their jobs, and the government being blamed. 25% of the UK TV industry lost their jobs in the last 4 years and we never hear a peep about it! Some jobs are 'real jobs' I guess.

When my colleagues and I started digging around in CDC data on pregnancy-related deaths, we noticed something surprising: the rate of ectopic pregnancy deaths had more than doubled in recent years. Nearly 200 women died between 2020 and 2025. So we set out to learn why 🧵
A chart showing an increase in the rate of deaths after an ectopic pregnancy, normalized by the number of live births. In the three-year period starting in 2014, the rate is a little above 4 deaths per million live births. The rate rises sharply for the 2020-2022 period and continues to increase, to 9.8 deaths per million births, in 2023-2025.

No flat projection can give an accurate representation of the surface of a sphere. If you make relative areas more equal, other distortions increase. In this case vertical (latitude) distances are increased but horizontal (longitude) not exaggerating the distance between Cairo and Dar. Sorry

This would be a stronger argument if 1) the results of our GEs actually reflected voters preferences and 2) the Tories had not repeatedly changed the rules themselves - eg overseas voters, ID requirements and back to FPTP for mayors etc

It was not a carnival of democracy watching 0.25% of the public, who no one had elected & no one could hold to account, decide whether Boris Johnson/Jeremy Hunt, or Liz Truss/Rishi Sunak should wield the highest office in 2019/22. It was a wrong turn, made with good intentions. It needs reversing.

This is true, though they have to be v loathed in a multi member constituency
010
Guy Baily @guybaily.bsky.social · 11/05/2026
A different definition of democracy might be that politicians are kicked out of power when they become unpopular but in a v proportional system a loathed centrist can be a permanent fixture of changing coalitions. All systems have an element of compromise but FPTP is absolute f@&£ery
110
Guy Baily @guybaily.bsky.social · 11/05/2026
Yep that’s proportionality. But no system is truly proportional. The Welsh MMC system discriminates against smaller parties. The Scottish system favours a party that can dominate the constituency vote.
110
Guy Baily @guybaily.bsky.social · 11/05/2026
The word ‘democratic’ is doing a lot of work here. The idea that more proportional is necessarily more democratic is highly contestable, though grossly un proportional is clearly bad. As for the rest I agree and would add the totally corrupt Lords

Some smaller parties might have done better. Reform would have been better contained by a majoritarian anti vote. But I agree about the big picture in the past. Next time though will be a minefield under FPTP
000
Guy Baily @guybaily.bsky.social · 10/05/2026
Ranked Preference voting (as in Aus) keeps the MP constituency link, means every MP has the support of a majority of voters and avoids the tactical voting roulette game we are all going to face next round under FPTP. It’s also a familiar and easy fit for our political culture
110
Guy Baily @guybaily.bsky.social · 10/05/2026
The aim of an electoral system is not to be as close as possible to perfect proportionality. There needs to be compromise with other issues: producing effective govt. Kicking politicians out of power when the mood turns against them. Maybe excluding the most marginal wingnuts.
