I also remember when I spoke to a senior colleague who was convinced that Google would soon solve all questions regarding cross-linguistic variation in child-directed speech. She didn't believe that Google has zero data on child-directed speech in probably the vast majority of languages.

Under rapid climate change, restoring ecosystems to resemble past states no longer seems relevant But what do we do instead? We suggest ecological complexity as a target I’ll be talking about our recent & forthcoming research on this at #ECCB26 besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

This study shows that ecological complexity is empirically measurable, and its development in restoration can be influenced by key variables, which have mechanistic underpinnings. The foundational ro...

In academia, we rarely appreciate the fact that we have all survived and escaped an education system built for uniformity and mediocrity, and that it is an incredible freedom to work at a public university. The question is what we do with this freedom. Uncritical "AI" adoption renounces it.

I say this as someone who grew up blue collar. I spent my childhood moving around, living in hotels with my mom, a brief stint at my dad’s trailer or co-op. We ate day old bread and stew from dented cans. Learning to learn is not for rich kids and our value does not derive from what the bosses want.

Some terms are very popular in conservation, but are not unmitigated positives ‘Resilience’: keeping systems the same may make ultimate collapse more likely ‘Connectivity’: can allow the spread of fire, disease & invasives ‘Species-rich’: is simplistic & ignores uniqueness & trophic structures

Bored of claims that reducing meat eating will mean valuable habitats will become undergrazed Reduced meat eating would decrease the land given to intensive livestock farming & arable crops grown to feed livestock Semi-natural habitats are obviously not the basis of industrial meat production

no lies detected. #civilrights
The image shows a text post from a tumble user with the handle "theconcealedweapon" making an argument about the importance of protecting the rights of criminals as a safeguard against government tyranny. The post presents the following key points:

If you want to prevent government tyranny, ensuring criminals have rights must be your top priority
This is not meant as a joke or exaggeration
Without rights for criminals, governments can simply label people as criminals to strip away their rights
The post claims this has been a common tactic of tyrannical governments throughout history
The post concludes that believing people who break laws should forfeit their rights is effectively supporting tyranny

The argument centers on the idea that due process and legal protections for accused/convicted persons are fundamental safeguards against authoritarian government overreach.

Ursula le Guin, on the accusation that fantasy is an escape from reality
[“Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don’t we consider it his duty to escape? The moneylenders, the know-nothings, the authoritarians have us all in prison; if we value the freedom of the mind and soul, if we’re partisans of liberty, then it’s our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can.”]

I made a #linguistics meme about degrammaticalization
Cartoon: my favorite SHIP dynamic: Degrammaticalization.
Two figures, one big, with broad shoulders, smiling and reaching out to the other figure. The second figure is smaller and turning away.
The first figure is described as follows:

Noun: independent,
strong, always there to provide a safe haven for suffix

The second figure is described as follows:

Ship: used to depend a Lot on Noun, now starting to do their own thing
