Fun day at work! (Souvenir bat from the Brooklyn Dodgers Long Island boosters, signed by a number of '57 Dodgers, in a ultimately vain attempt to drive support to keep the team in Brooklyn)
A tiny souvenir baseball bat in hand. Or possibly a regular sized baseball bat in the hand of a giant. How could you know?? Souvenir baseball bat placed on grey paper sweep, awaiting being imaged. Visible are the Louisville Slugger badge in the center, and Long Island Dodger Boosters 1957 on the right. Close up of Sandy Koufax's signature on the bat.

Loyal followers will recall that I imaged this back in 2018, fresh from the donation box, prior to its getting the conservation spiff up described in the blog!
A concept drawing of Captain America by Joe Simon, addressed to Martin Goodman, publisher of Timely Comics (later becoming Marvel Comics), indicating Cap's pants should be solid blue, and his shirt should be "mailed armor". Simon's caption at the bottom reads:

"Martin - Here's the character - I think he should have a kid buddy or he'll be talking to himself all the time. I'm working on script. Send schedule. Regards - Joe"

It's National Comic Book Day! Before he was famously depicted punching Hitler on the cover of the first issue of his comic, Captain America was a concept drawing. That drawing was donated to us in 2018, albeit a little worse for wear. Here's how it was repaired. ⬇️ blogs.loc.gov/preservation...

MST3K via @rifftrax.com was as true a return to form as you could hope for. An ineptly constructed movie. Gleeful deconstruction via riffs. It felt like the gang picked it up right where it left off 27 years ago. If not for the horror of seeing Mike's face in HD you'd never know they left!

The media gave more coverage to a totally fake, invented idea that the federal government was withholding aid to Hurricane Helene victims in 2024 than to Trump actually doing it in 2025/26. Why did the fake story get more coverage than the real one?

This is pretty fucking wild. I had assumed in a worst case scenario he would target blue zip codes and toss ballots based on technicalities but this is even worse than I imagined.
Not only is this system astonishingly untested, USPS has simultaneously implemented an
impracticable zero percent failure rate.
13 When ballots are submitted to USPS in large-volume
batches, if any one ballot in the batch cannot be verified against the Portal, all ballots in that
batch will be rejected. For example, if a state election official brings a batch of 10,000 ballots to
USPS and USPS is unable to match just one of those ballots against the Portal – because, for
example, someone has recently changed their name after marriage or they’ve moved – then
USPS would refuse to mail the remaining 9,999 ballots as well. As the whistleblower notes,

The Library is devastated to learn of the passing of Dolly Parton, a music legend and titan of children's literacy. Her Imagination Library program has earned multiple Library Literacy Awards and, in 2018, she visited us to donate its 100 millionth book to our collection and host a story time. 🦋❤️

9.5 hours later, that's a wrap on #NatBookFest for me! A terrific time at the inaugural Collections Digitization table talking about digitization, and then escorting the legend Frank Miller around, who was so thoughtful and kind. So mamy smiling faces came away from his signing line! Including mine!
A program from the 2026 National Book Festival. The figures on it have had word balloons added by Frank Miller stating "He's a liar!" and "Kevin is a damn liar", adding his signature at the bottom right. I will treasure this forever.

Just canceled my DashPass and sent this email to DoorDash. I encourage you to do the same if you support D.C. home rule. press@doordash.com and ir@doordash.com
Hello,

I’m writing to let you know that I just canceled my DashPass because of DoorDash’s disgraceful campaign against D.C. home rule.

DoorDash is urging Congress to nullify a new D.C. law imposing a 20 percent tax on food-delivery services—not merely by overturning that law, but by prohibiting the District from enacting any new tax without prior congressional approval. That is an extraordinarily sweeping assault on D.C.’s right to govern itself and an odious insult to the District’s residents.

I am especially disgusted by DoorDash’s public claim that it is somehow defending D.C. residents while actively seeking to strip us of our right to govern ourselves through our own democratically elected lawmakers. Please do not pretend that disenfranchising District residents is an act undertaken on our behalf.

I intend to publicize DoorDash’s attack on home rule as widely as possible and urge everyone I know to boycott the company.

Shame on you.

The Library of Congress has a new exhibit on the "Declaration's Promise" opening on the 3rd. Roughly half is on the creation of the Declaration, the other on the 250 years of struggle for its fullest and truest application. A genuinely moving display of artifacts objects, and A/V tell the story.

Panel from Fantastic Four #11, featuring the character find of the year, Crimeasaurus Rex. CR is seen bursting thru the brick wall of a bank, money bags hung around their shoulders. Reed Richards stammers "This is..this is..." before Johnny interjects "...this is totally awesome!". Sue facepalms as she sighs "Oh my god Johnny". Ben meanwhile stays focused: "It'z a robot, yeah boss? We can clobber it?"

A thing I digitized is in this, which is pretty rad! Behold, Lincoln's disembodied hand! Now digitally encoded into artificial DNA!
This bronze casting of Lincoln's right hand shows a clenched fist holding the sawed-off handle of a broomstick. The bottom of the cast reads "Original made Springfield, Ill. May 21, 1860 by L.W. Volk."

Because you're a cool person who reads alt text, here's a link to the 3D scan so can print out lil Lincoln Fists: https://labs.loc.gov/work/experiments/loc-3d/cast-lincolns-hand/?st=3d-item

"The works of the roots of the vines, of the trees, must be destroyed to keep up the price, and this is the saddest. bitterest thing of all. Carloads of oranges dumped on the ground. The people came for miles to take the fruit. but this could not be. How would thev buy oranges at twenty cents a dozen if they could drive out and pick them up? And men with hoses squirt kerosene on the oranges, and they are angry at the crime, angry at the people who have come to take the fruit. A million people hungry, needing the fruit- and kerosene sprayed over the golden mountains. And the smell of rot fills the country. Burn coffee for fuel in the ships. Burn corn to keep warm, it makes a hot fire. Dump potatoes in the rivers and place guards along the banks to keep the hungry people fron fishing them out. Slaughter the pigs and bury them, and let the putrescence drip down into the earth.
There is a crime here that goes bevond denunciation. There is a sorrow here that weeping cannot symbolize. There is a failure here that topples all our success. The ertile earth, the straight tree rows, the sturdv trunks, and the ripe fruit. And childrer dying of pellagra must die because a profit cannot be taken from an orange. And coroners must fill in the certificate- died of malnutrition- because the food must rot must be forced to rot. The people come with nets to fish for potatoes in the river, and he guards hold them back; they come in rattling cars to get the dumped oranges, bu the kerosene is sprayed. And they stand still and watch the potatoes float bv, listen to the screaming pigs being killed in a ditch and covered with quick-lime, watch the mountains of oranges slop down to a putrefying ooze; and in the eyes of the people here is the failure; and in the eyes of the hungry there is a growing wrath. In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage."
